Just checked out the new 007 film, Casino Royale.
I had read the book a long time ago and have hated the Peter Sellers parody version and wanted THE official production company, EON production, to make a proper version of the first Bond novel by Ian Fleming.
I won’t go into details or give away secrets but suffice to say, I was happily satisfied. (Even while suffering from chills and body aches from a lingering cold). The movie took a lot from the book but more importantly, it had a grittier feel which was like a breath of fresh air to the long franchise.
Yes, Pierce maybe “cuter” but Daniel Craig works. He IS Bond and I am very happy with his performance as well as his screen presence. People forget that backing Craig is THE 007 production company started by Cubby Broccoli.
This film has all you would expect from a 007 film: beautiful locations, a catchy song (ex Soundgarden Chris Cornell does not disappoint), gorgeous women, expensive cars, terrific stunts (I understand that the 7 flips the Aston Martin took is an on screen record). When I heard that they changed the card game from Baccarat to Poker, I cringed but even that worked on screen. But my biggest surprised was that they pretty much left the torture scene almost as is from the book.
Go see this film and get yourself prepared for the next 007 film in 2008!
