I read the interesting article about gender equality in politics.
The article introduced The Fiftys Project ( FP ).
That’s the group aiming to eliminate the gender gap in the political field.
They investigated this past spring's nationwide unified local elections.
The group backed 29 female candidates.
The FP surveyed them to find out what challenges they faced and what they felt during the campaign.
According to the survey, half of the candidates said that they had encountered insulting attitudes or comments based on their gender.
For example…
Some candidates handing out her business card were asked, "Can I call you for a date?" .
Some candidates faced defamation and harassment on social media and in emails.
Some candidates were touched or gotten closer than necessary.
The representative director of FP said ,
“ derogatory language abounds
during election campaigns. The problem has deep roots."
Reading this article, I think the barriers to gender equality in political field have been very high in our country.
We Japanese people need to change our mindset even more.
