I have received the blood work results. They are indicative of hypocalcemia (low calcium level) due to renal (kidney) failure. This is not a reversible condition. However, it is a controllable condition. She will need to be monitored closely initially to make sure we have a good balance of vitamin D (calcitriol) and calcium supplemenation as well as monitoring her kidney values. We will also have to be somewhat restrictive with her diet as some foods can decrease calcium absorption or increase excretion. Dogs who are diagnosed with early kidney failure on average will live ~1 year. During that time, we monitor the blood work as well as blood pressure periodically and make adjustments to her treatment as necessary. Obviously, as dogs age, they become more susceptible to other issues which may affect her kidneys negatively.
