大メジャー・レーベルのRCAに残された「Black Music」の歴史を追った1992年にリリースされた3枚組のCD。こんなお値段で転がっていたのでつい手がでました。
3枚のディスクが
Disc 1が「Rock It In Rhythm - A Blues and Gospel Heritage」
Disc 2が「Parade of Giants - The Story of Jazz」
Disc 3が「Pop, Rock Soul and Beyond」
というようにテーマ別になっています。
1枚目のブルース編はアナログ時代に中村とうようさん達によって選曲された「RCA ブルースの古典」という歴史に残る名盤が制作されたようにRCAは充実したカタログを誇っていて先ずは文句のないところ。
2枚目のジャズ編は戦前から戦後すぐの頃のものこそ充実していますが、モダン期に入るとやや弱いかなという印象。時代が飛んでのRoy HargroveとかMarcus Robertsの付け足しはやや違和感。
3枚目のR&B～Soul編はハリー・ベラフォンテで始まるところが如何にもRCA。勿論エルヴィスやサム・クックといった超大物もいるわけですが、60年代から70年代になるとことブラック・ミュージックという観点からするとRCAはチト弱いかなぁ、80年代以降盛り返すような気もしますが。
とか何とかエラそうなことを書いておりますが、一つのレーベルでこの長きに渡って広義ブラック・ミュージックを俯瞰できるなんてのはこのRCAしかないわけで、その意味ではヘタな文句にはバチがあたりな労作です。
