Deloitte faces South African lawsuit

デロイトが、８６．４百万ポンド相当の損失をめぐり、南アフリカで、２つの株主団体（黒人エンパワーメント株主団）から訴えられたという記事。

Big Four firm Deloitte is facing a lawsuit from two investors over alleged losses worth 2bn Rand (£86.4m)

２つの団体は、２０１４年に破綻したAfrican Bank Investments Ltd (ABIL)の株主であり、同銀行の監査報告書において、デロイトが、財政状態は適正に表示されているという誤った意見を表明したと、主張しています。

Hlumisa and Eyomhlaba – two black empowerment shareholders in African Bank Investments Ltd (ABIL) – have alleged that Deloitte falsely noted in its audit opinion of ABIL that financial statements fairly represented the bank’s position.

現地紙の報道によると、投資家たちは、ABILにおける異常な会計慣行を、監査人が見逃したと述べているそうです。

According to reports in the Johannesburg-based Business Day, the investors said that the auditors failed to indicate “unorthodox” accounting practices in ABIL, which collapsed in 2014.

This, the investors said, led to losses of 729m Rand for Hlumisa and 1.3bn Rand for Eyomhlaba.

訴状のなかで投資家たちは、ABILは、優良債権のように見せかける目的だけのために、同じ債務者に対して新しい貸付を行うことにより、不良債権を隠していたと主張しています。

In a court summons, the investors alleged, “The auditors were aware or should have been aware that ABIL was concealing non-performing loans by making new loans to the same debtors to service old loans for the sole purpose of making collections look good when they were not.”

デロイトは、訴訟が提起されたことを認め、強力に反論していくとしています。

The Big Four firm confirmed it was aware of the lawsuit and promised a vigorous defence against any litigation.
