“Accountant of Auschwitz” to be tried in Germany

「アウシュビッツの会計士」として知られているナチス親衛隊隊員が、ドイツで裁判を受けることになったという記事。30万人もの人々を殺害した罪の従犯であったとして裁かれます。

この人物（正式の会計士ではありません）は、悪名高い死の収容所で殺された被害者から所持品を略奪したとされています。通貨や貴重品が奪われ、それらは軍事資金とするためベルリンに送られました。

The International Business Times reported that, while not officially an accountant, former SS guard Oskar Gröning is similarly accused by German state prosecutors of economically benefiting the Nazis.

Gröning was charged with plundering the belongings of Holocaust victims who were murdered in the gas chambers of the infamous death camp.

Money and valuable possessions were stolen from camp victims before being sent to Berlin to aid the war effort.

この訴追は、「アウシュビッツ・ビルケナウ」収容所として知られる収容所に、ハンガリーから42万5千人が移送された2ヶ月間にかかわるものです。検察は、その間30万人が亡くなったとしています。

The charges relate to a two-month period he spent at the camp, when 425,000 people from Hungary were transported to the camp, formally known as Auschwitz-Birkenau. Prosecutors say that at least 300,000 of those people were killed in the same period.

訴追された親衛隊員は、ドイツのある雑誌に対し、自分は作戦の中の小さな歯車にすぎないと述べて、罪を否認していました。

Gröning has previously denied his culpability, telling Germany’s Der Spiegel magazine he was just a “small cog” in the operation.

彼は、親衛隊幹部と疑われた人物の自宅が捜索された際に逮捕されました。93歳だそうです。裁判に耐え得るだけの健康状態にあると認められたのは、彼だけでした。

Gröning, who is 93 years old, was arrested following a string of raids on the homes of suspected SS officers. He was the only one deemed fit enough to stand in court.
