Good morning. Good morning. Good evening.
Today is 7 January, and speaking of 7 January! The seven herbs!
Shichikusa porridge is a traditional Japanese food eaten on 7 January, the day of the ‘Jinhi-no-Sekku’, and is a porridge containing the seven spring herbs. The seven herbs are said to ward off evil spirits as they sprout in early spring, and are meant to wish for good health. It has also been eaten to rest the stomach and intestines weakened by the New Year.
Can you say all seven herbs?
‘Seri, Nazuna, Gogyo, Hakobera, Hotokenoza, Suzuna and Suzushiro.’
Gogyo is the spiderwort, hakobera is the cucumber, suzuna is the turnip and suzushiro is the radish.
They were familiar medicinal herbs that grew everywhere, but are no longer seen these days.
