大谷石

大谷石資料館/ Oya History Museum 

 

大谷石とは、栃木県宇都宮市大谷町付近一帯から採掘される、流紋岩質凝灰岩の一種です。

その地下採掘場跡は、1919年（大正8年）～1986年（昭和61年）まで70年近く大谷石を掘り出してできた巨大な地下空間になっています。
坑内の広さ2万平方メートル（140mx150m）深さは30ｍで、ギリシャの巨大遺跡のように壮観です。

年平均気温は8度前後。多くのツルハシの跡が残り、ずっしりと年輪の重さを感じさせます。

 

Oya-ishi, a kind of the rhyolitic tuffs, is mined around Otani-cho, Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture.

Otani Stone had been mined for nearly 70 years from 1919 to 1986, creating a huge underground space.
It is 20,000 square meters wide (140 m x 150 m) and 30m deep.
You can enjoy a spectacular view like huge ruins in Greece.

The annual average temperature is around 8 degrees.

There still remain many traces of the pick and they will remind you the space used to be a quarry.
