I first came across Oxalis Triangularis many years ago at a Taiwanese student's home. I instantly liked the flower, but nobody knew its name. It's almost like a purple version of Shamrock, which all Canadian florists have for Easter. Before I left her home, the student gave me a small pot of Oxalis as she must've sensed I liked the flower.
オギザレス（紫の舞）を初めて目にしたのは随分前に台湾人の学生のところに行った時でその時はまさに一目惚れでした。ただ誰もその名前すら知らなかったのです。強いて言えばイースターのときに出回るシャムロックいう緑のクローバーに似ています。私がよほど気に入ったと言うことを察してか、帰り際にその学生が小さなオギザレスの鉢をプレゼントしてくれました。

Although I gave good care to Oxalis, it died away. I was sad and was disappointed. However, within a year later, I found a new Oxalis plant in another houseplant pot. And then in another one and another one. I still don't know how the little Oxalis bulb transferred from its original soil to the others.
オギザレスを丹精込めて育てたつもりでしたが、残念なことに半年ほどで死に絶えてしまいました。ところが数ヶ月後にオギザレスが他の鉢植えの中に咲いているのを見つけたのです。そしてまた他の鉢にも。。どうやってオギザレスが鉢から鉢へと渡っていったのかは未だに謎です。

A few years later, we moved from a house to an apartment with a two-level patio, and we started growing many potted outdoor plants. They are lavender, mints, rosemary, fuchsias, geraniums, peonies, forsythia, crabapple tree, purple sage salvia, thyme, wisteria, and so and so on.
それから数年後今までの一軒家住まいから二段階になったパティオがあるコンドミニアムに移りました。かなり大きなパティオなので、今ではラベンダー、ミント、ローズマリー、フーシア、ジェラニウム、芍薬、レンギョウ、姫林檎、紫サルビア、タイム、フジ、などなどがあります。

Now there are two significant changes in our patio plants: The first surprise was the geraniums we left outside over the winter did not die but became mightier and flourishing larger flowers! In other words, they became perennial, perhaps due to global warming, or maybe I should say global WARNING.
さてこのパティオに二つの大きな変化が生じました。まずはジェラニュームが外で冬を越し力強く大きな花を咲かせたのです。多分温暖化のために一年草が多年草化したのでしょう。温暖化と言うよりは温暖化警告（Global Warmingウォーミング、Warning ウォーニング）と言った方が良いでしょう。

The other surprise was the sudden random appearance of Oxalis among the patio pots! Oxalis is native to Brazil, where the average temperature is above 20C. Thus they grow in warm and humid places like South America, Cuba, and Taiwan, and so on, but not supposed to be here in Vancouver, where we have long and unrelenting winter. However, at least for the last several years, Vancouver's winter hasn't been unrelenting at all and, it's even better here than in Tokyo. Global warming and warning!
もう一つ驚いたことは室内用だと思っていたオギザレスがパティオの鉢の中に突然現れ始めたのです。オギザレスの原産地はブラジルで、南米の他キューバや台湾など湿気が高い亜熱帯地方に群生するようです。でもここは長くて厳しい冬で知られたカナダのバンクーバーです。ところが良く考えてみると最近はずっと長くて厳しい冬などありませんでした。むしろ東京の冬より過ごしやすくらいです。これも温暖化でしょうか？

Another thing I noticed about Oxalis is that it prefers to live with someone else rather than by itself. She is very friendly, congenial, and cooperative. Moreover, she looks harmonious with the main plant she is dwelling with, and most of all, she doesn't eat up all the nutrients from the soil as the parasites do.
もう一つオギザレスについて気づいたことは、彼女は自分一人よりも誰かと一緒にいることを好むようです。さらに彼女は鉢の持ち主と和気藹々と同居生活を営んでいて、他の寄生してくる雑草のように土の栄養分を独り占めすることもありません。

Oxalis has her mind. Maybe she wasn't pleased to be brought to Canada and was placed indoors; instead, she always wanted to dwell with someone else in the sunny outdoors. Her two wishes finally came true partly by global warming/warning. She would be happiest if she stayed in her native land instead of being brought to foreign countries that do not suit her.
オギザレスには彼女の考えがあります。多分快適だった生まれ故郷からカナダに持ってこられ、家の中に閉じ込められたことに不満だったのでしょう。本当はさんさんと陽の当たる明るいところで他の草木と一緒に過ごしたかったのでしょう。全く環境が異なる国に連れてこられるのではなく、生まれ育った土地で大らかに過ごすことが彼女にとっての小さな至福の生活なのではないでしょうか。

MAGA (Make America Great Again) Hat

Since my last blog, I started to use a different format; English first and then Japanese. Most people seem to like the new style of English and Japanese separate; however, some prefer the sentence by sentence translation.
I want to challenge you to read my English first and then read the Japanese translation to see whether or not you understood it correctly. I am beginning with a simple and short essay like this one. I hope you will enjoy the new format.

前回の分から今までの文ごとの和訳ではなく、初めに英文次に和訳にすることにしました。この新しいフォーマットは皆さんへのチャレンジです。まず英語を読んでください。そして次に日本語を読むとどのくらい分かったかを知ることができます。内容も今回のようになるべく易しく短いものから始めます。よろしくお願いします。


MAGA (Make America Great Again)* Hat　　　　真っ赤な”マガ”帽子

I planned to meet with my friend at 9 in the morning to have a walk and talk. Today was going to be very sunny, and I needed my hat. But, where IS my hat?
The hat I bought in Japan is the only one that fits my big head, but where IS it? There is another one that nearly fits my big head. That's the big red MAGA hat. I had no choice but to wear the MAGA hat. My friend warned me someone may say something nasty or even throw something at me.

I have never been as self-conscious as this morning. Instead of enjoying the beautiful morning seascape, I checked the people's expressions from the corner of my eyes. Nobody even seemed to notice my big red hat. Instead, some gave me a warm smile, signalling that we understand that you couldn't find your hat, and you are stuck with this.Yes, we live in Canada! And people are polite and friendly here. Perhaps we can start wearing a hat saying, "Keep Canada Beautiful Ever, " can't we?

Ps. I found my hat the next day; however, it was a cloudy day, and I didn't need the hat).

今朝9時に友人と会って海岸沿いの遊歩道を散歩することになっていました。今日もガンガンデリになりそう。絶対に帽子がいるのですが、帽子が見つからない！日本で買ったその帽子だけが頭でっかちの私にちょうどいいのに。帽子はどこ？他にもう一つ私の大頭に入る帽子があります。でもそれは被りたくない。トランプがキャンペーンに使った真っ赤なMAGA（Make America Great Again)の帽子です。でも仕方ないからMAGAを被って出かけました。友人は変なことを言われたり、下手するとものを投げつけられるかもしれないなどと言っていました。

今朝ほどこんなに人目を気にしたことはありませんでした。美しい朝の海辺の景色を楽しむ代わりに、私はMAGA帽のしたから上目遣いで行きあう人たちの表情を伺っていたからです。でも少しして分かったのですが、誰も私のMAGA帽なんて気に留めていないようです。中には笑顔で”分かっているよ。帽子が見つからなかったんだろ？”とでもいうように頷いてくれる人たちもいました。幸いにも私たちはお行儀が良くて親切な人々が住むカナダにいるのです。MAGA帽ではなく、カナダ用にKCBE（ちょっと語呂が悪いのですが.
カナダよ、永遠に美しく）という帽子を作ったらどうでしょうか？

Ps.帽子は翌日見つかりました。でもその日は曇りだったので出番はありませんでした。

Black Eyed Susan??

I don’t remember seeing these flowers in Japan, but they are prevalent in North America.
It almost looks like a miniature sunflower.
Now I am a bit confused about the meaning of its name. First, I thought it means Susan with black eyes, but someone said to me many years ago, “black-eyed“ means you got some bruised eyes, perhaps by some fights or an accident. I still don’t know which one is right. If someone knows the answer, please let me know.

The name “Susan” comes from Hebrew, which means “Lily,” meaning ordinary, kind, and loving. As you can see from the picture above, “Black-Eyed Susan” may not be an outstanding beauty, yet she can be an excellent friend, colleague, boss, wife, or mother.

“Black-Eyed Susan” is a hardy perennial. The flowers come back every year even you don’t care about them at all.

この花の日本語名をネットで調べると、ハンゴンソウ、大反魂草と書いてありましたが、少し違うようにように思われます。

この花の名前はその通りに”黒い瞳のスーザン”だと思っていました。ところが、ある人によると、”パンチなどを食らって目の周りが黒くなってしまったスーザン”という意味だと話しています。どちらが正しいのでしょうか？　ご存知の方教えてください。

スーザンという名前はヘブライ語で百合で、平凡、親切、優しい、などの意味があります。上の写真からもお分かりのように、”Black Eyed Susan”は特別目立つような美人ではないかもしれませんが、きっと素晴らしいお友達、同僚、上司、奥さん、お母さんになるでしょうね。

Black Eyed Susan はとても丈夫な多年草なので、全然手入れをしなくても毎年決まって綺麗な花を咲かせてくれるのです。

罪と罰をオーディオブックで / Try Crime and Punishment by Audiobook

ドストエフスキーの大作”罪と罰”を読んだことありますか？
Have you read Dostoevsky’s"Crime and Punishment”?

私は何度かトライしましたがいつも途中で挫折してしまっていました。
I tried several times, but I never made it to the last page.

今回は現代英語訳のオーディオブックでやっと克服しました。
This time I’ve finally overcome my problems by using the audiobook in modern English.

ちょっと時間がかかる庭仕事をしなくてはならなかったので、退屈しのぎにオーディオブックを聴くことにしました。
I picked up the audiobook to keep my company while doing a long and monotonous garden work.

庭仕事のような静かな単純作業の時はオーディオブックがぴったりです。
Audiobooks are perfect for quiet and simple tasks like gardening.

それに罪と罰のような名作は英語の場合オーディオブックでもEブックやキンドルでもほとんど皆無料です。
Besides, the English versions of most famous literature like Crime and Punishment is free in audiobook, ebook or Kindle format.

確かに名作シリーズは日本語でも無料で聴けるのがあるようですが、このような大作になると途中終でわってしまうようです。
Although many masterpieces are free in Japanese language, the free service tends to end halfway through.

私はオーディオブックが好きなのでカナダではいつも利用しています。
As I love audiobooks, I use them all the time in Canada.

日本でもオーディオブックを聴こうとしたのですが、どうもうまくできませんでした。
I tried listening to audiobooks in Japan, but it didn’t work well.

その理由の一つは環境とライフスタイルの違いです。
One of the reasons is the lifestyle difference between Japan and Canada.

カナダでは車の中で聴いたり散歩をしながら聴いたりしますが、日本ではほとんど電車やバス、また外を歩いても雑音が多いため言葉が聞き取りにくいからです。
In Canada, I listen while driving or while walking, but in Japan, especially in the big city like Tokyo, it is difficult to hear the words when on trains or buses or just walking outside because of the noise.

二つ目は日本語のオーディオブックが高いということ。
The second reason seems to be that the Japanese audiobooks are too expensive.

その理由は日本語がわかる人口が少ないためオーディオブックの制作コストが高くなるからだそうです。
It is because Japanese-speaking population is much fewer than that of English, which results in Japanese audiobooks being sold at high prices.

英語人口は１５億人、日本語は全員としても一億人くらいなのでかなりの差があります。
The English-speaking population is 1.5 billion while the Japanese-speaking is only about 100 million.

最後の三つ目に日本語のオーディオブックの朗読時間/聴読時間が英語に比べて二倍近くかかるということに気がつきました。
Thirdly, I realized that the narrating or listening time of Japanese audiobooks is almost twice as long as the English.

例えば罪と罰の場合日本語では40時間、英語では読む人により差がありますが20−25時間のようです。
For example, it takes nearly 40 hours to finish listening in Japanese, whereas only 20-25 hours in English depending on a narrator.

YouTubeで西村俊彦さんという方の朗読で罪と罰を途中まで聴きました。ちょうど昭和の劇場を思い出させる重厚で19世紀のロシアを思い浮かばせる素晴らしい朗読でした。
I listened to Crime and Punishment halfway through by a narration of Mr. Toshihiko Nishimura on YouTube. It is an excellent naration with a strong flavour of 19th century Russia, which reminded me of the theatres in Showa era.

それに比べて英語版は分かりやすい口語訳なので、どちらかというとハリウッド映画を見ている気分です。
In contrast, the English version is based on the modern English translation and I almost feel as if I was watching a Hollywood movie.

今日のテーマの罪と罰に合わせて球根に猛毒のコリンを含む彼岸花（曼珠沙華）を選びました。
In order to align with today's theme, I chose Higanbana (Manjushage), which contains the highly poisonous "choline" in its bulbs.

彼岸花は大変美しい真っ赤な花ですが、毒のためか何か不吉な花と呼ばれることがあります。
Higanbana is a very beautiful bright red flower, however, it is often called an ominous flower perhaps because of its poison

英語ではスパイダー・リリーとよばれています。日本語と違って至って明るいですね。
In Engliush it is simply called Spider Lilly. Unlike Japanese name, it doesn't sound dark or sinister at all, does it?

それでも彼岸花が不吉で情熱的な花に見えるのは私だけでしょうか？
Is it only I who still feel that Higanbana is an uncanny yet a passionate flower?

相貌失認症(プロソパグノシア） / Prosopagnosia

上のボートの写真は今朝偶然見かけたものです。４艘のボートは皆ほぼ同じ大きさで、特に右の２艘は色も同じです。
The picture of the boat above is what I happened to see this morning. The four boats are all about the same size, especially the two on the right in the same color.

さて、相貌失認症(プロソパグノシア)って聞いたことありますか？
Now, have you heard of the word “Prosopagnosia?”

私が初めてこの言葉を耳にしたのはテレビドラマ相棒を見た時でした。
The first time I heard this word was when I watched one of the Japanese TV series called the Partners.

その時水谷豊が演じる杉下右京警部が事件に関わっているある女性が相貌失認症ではないかと言いました。
The police detective Ukyo Sugishita, played by Yutaka Mizutani, said that a woman involved in the case might have “prosopagnosia.”"

博覧強記の杉下警部の説明によると相貌失認症というのは人の顔が覚えられない病気だとのことでした。
According to Detective Sugishita, who has an amazing encyclopedic knowledge and memory, “prosopagnosia” is a disease in which a person's face cannot be remembered.

それを見た後自分も相貌失認症ではないかと気になり始めました。
After having watched the TV show, I started to wonder if I may also have “prosopagnosia”.

なぜなら登場人物が多く知らない俳優さんばかりのドラマなどを見ていると途中で筋がわからなくなってしまうことよくがあり、
This is because I often get lost of the story line when I watch a drama with many characters played by actors and actresses I hardly know.

また予期しない場所で予期しない人とばったり会った時、相手は私に気づいても私は相手が誰なのか検討がつかないことが良くあるからです。
Also, when I meet an unexpected person in an unexpected place, the other person may notice me and tries to speak to me, but I often fail to recognize the person.

顔を識別する能力は時と場合でかなり違うようです。
The people’s ability to identify faces seems to be quite different from time to time.


研究結果によると特に違う人種の顔が覚えにくいという傾向にあるようです。
According to the studies many people fail to remember the faces of different races.

反対に自分と同年代の日本人女性の顔は簡単に覚えられるような気がします。
On the contrary, it seems to be easy to remember the faces of those with same sex, age group and nationality.

相貌失認症の場合もどこまでが正常でどこから異常なのかと判断するのは容易ではないようです。
Like any other mental illnesses, it is not easy to draw a line between normal state and prosopagnosia.

ただし家族など毎日顔を合わせる人の区別ができなくなったらその病気の範疇に入るのではないでしょうか？
However, if it becomes impossible to distinguish between people who you meet every day,
such as family members, wouldn't it fall into the category of the disease?

病気と診断されるのは人口の約２％ほどだそうです。
According to some researches, about 2% of the population is diagnosed with the illness.

調べてみましたが、結局私の場合は若干その要素がありながら正常範囲でした。
I did some research, but in the end I was in the normal range with some traces of oddities.

さて相貌失認症は難しい言葉ですが、日本語の場合字を見ればたいてい意味が想像できます。
Now, ”prosopagnosia” is a difficult word, but in Japanese you can usually imagine its meaning by looking at the kanji or characters.

ところが英語はそのようにはいきません。
However, in English, it won’t work like this.

Prosopagnosiaは正式な医学用語で、語源はギリシャ語のProsopon (顔）とAgnosia（欠乏）からきています。
“Prosopagnosia” is a medical term, which is from the Greek words Prosopon (face) and Agnosia (deficiency).

しかしこれは覚えにくく発音しにくいので、一般には色の区別ができない人を”色盲”をというように”顔盲”と呼んでいます。
However, since the word “Prosopagnosia” is very difficult to remember and to to pronounce, it is generally called “Face Blindness”just like “Colour Blindness”.

一般的に日本語は面倒な文字変換が必要なために複雑で厄介な言語とよく言われていますが、
Generally, Japanese is often said to be a troublesome language because it requires cumbersome character conversions,

このように他言語に比べてずっと便利で気の利いた言葉でありえるのです。
but the proper use of kanji can make Japanese handier and smarter language than others.
