『日本書紀』推古天皇 13
五月甲寅朔戊午、勅鞍作鳥曰「朕、欲興隆內典、方將建佛刹、肇求舍利。時、汝祖父司馬達等便獻舍利。又於國無僧尼。於是、汝父多須那、爲橘豐日天皇、出家恭敬佛法。又汝姨嶋女、初出家、爲諸尼導者、以修行釋教。今朕爲造丈六佛、以求好佛像、汝之所獻佛本則合朕心。又造佛像既訖、不得入堂、諸工人不能計、以將破堂戸、然汝不破戸而得入、此皆汝之功也。」則賜大仁位。因以給近江國坂田郡水田廿町焉。鳥、以此田爲天皇作金剛寺、是今謂南淵坂田尼寺。
秋七月、天皇、請皇太子令講勝鬘經、三日說竟之。是歲、皇太子亦講法華經於岡本宮、天皇大喜之、播磨國水田百町施于皇太子、因以納于斑鳩寺。
十五年春二月庚辰朔、定壬生部。

May 5th (Gregorian Calendar)
On the fifth day of May, the emperor issued an edict to Kuratsukuri no Tori (鞍作鳥), saying:
“I wish to promote the flourishing of Buddhism and have decided to build a temple, starting with a search for Buddha’s relics (仏舎利). At that time, your grandfather, Shime Tatsuto (司馬達等), immediately offered such relics. Moreover, when there were no monks or nuns in our land, your father, Tasuto (多須奈), took the tonsure and devoted himself to the Buddhist path in service to Emperor Yōmei (用明天皇). Furthermore, your aunt, Shima Me (嶋女), was the first to become a nun and served as a guide for other nuns, helping them practice Buddhism.
Now, I sought a good Buddha image (仏像) for the creation of a statue of the ‘Jōroku Buddha (丈六仏)’ (a standing statue approximately 16 feet tall). The image you presented perfectly aligned with my vision. However, when the statue was completed, it proved difficult to place it inside the hall. Many craftsmen considered breaking down the door to bring it in, but you managed to do so without causing any damage. All of this is thanks to your efforts and skill.”
The emperor then bestowed upon Kuratsukuri no Tori (鞍作鳥) the rank of Dainin (大仁) (the third-highest of the twelve ranks of court nobility) and granted him twenty chō (町) (approximately 20 hectares) of rice fields in Sakata District (坂田郡), Ōmi Province (近江国).
Using the income from these rice fields, Kuratsukuri no Tori (鞍作鳥) built the Kongō-ji Temple (金剛寺) for the emperor. This temple is what is now known as the Sakata Nunnery of Minabuchi (南淵坂田尼寺), said to have been relocated from the Sakata Temple (坂田寺) in Ōmi (近江).
Autumn, Seventh Month
In the seventh month, the emperor invited the crown prince (Prince Shōtoku (聖徳太子)) to give a lecture on the Śrīmālādevī Sūtra (勝鬘経, Shōmangyō). Over three days, the prince completed his teaching of the text.
That same year, the crown prince also gave a lecture on the Lotus Sūtra (法華経, Hokkekyō) at the Okamoto Palace (岡本宮). The emperor was deeply pleased and, in gratitude, granted the crown prince 100 chō (町) of rice fields in Harima Province (播磨国). The crown prince dedicated these rice fields to the Ikaruga Temple (斑鳩寺, later known as Hōryū-ji 法隆寺).
Year 15 (Spring, Second Month)
On the first day of the second month, the emperor established the Mibu Be (壬生部), a hereditary group tasked with serving the imperial family.
≪この英文の和訳≫
五月五日、天皇は鞍作鳥（くらつくりのとり）に詔（みことのり）して次のように仰せられた。
「朕（ちん）は仏教を興隆させたいと願い、寺院を建立することを決め、まず仏の遺骨である仏舎利（ぶっしゃり）を求めた。その際、お前の祖父である司馬達等（しめたつと）がすぐに仏舎利を献上してくれた。また、国内に僧や尼がいなかった頃、お前の父、多須奈（たすな）が用明天皇のために出家し、仏教の道を深く信じ敬った。そして、お前の姨（おば）である嶋女（しまめ）は最初に尼となり、他の尼たちの導き手となって仏道を修行させた。
今、朕が丈六（じょうろく）の仏像を造るために、良い仏像の図を探していたとき、お前が奉った仏の図は、まさに朕の心に適うものであった。また、仏像が完成した後、堂内に安置するのが困難であり、多くの工人たちは戸を壊して搬入しようとした。しかし、お前は戸を壊すことなく堂内に仏像を入れることができた。これらはすべてお前の功績である」。
こうして、天皇は鞍作鳥に大仁（だいにん、十二冠位の第三位）の位を賜い、さらに近江国（おうみのくに）の坂田郡（さかたのこおり）にある水田二十町を授けられた。
鞍作鳥はこの田から得られる収入を用いて、天皇のために金剛寺を建立した。この寺は現在では南淵坂田尼寺（みなぶちさかたのあまでら）と呼ばれており、近江の坂田寺から移されたものである。
秋七月
秋七月、天皇は皇太子（聖徳太子）をお招きになり、『勝鬘経（しょうまんぎょう）』の講義をさせられた。この講義は三日間かかり、すべて説き終えられた。
同じ年、皇太子はさらに『法華経（ほけきょう）』を岡本宮（おかもとのみや）で講じられた。天皇はこれをたいへん喜ばれ、播磨国（はりまのくに）の水田百町を皇太子に贈られた。皇太子はこの田を斑鳩寺（いかるがでら、後の法隆寺）に納められた。
十五年春二月朔日（ついたち）、天皇は壬生部（みぶべ、皇子皇女に仕えるための部民）を設けられた。
