こんなに外国人教員が増えた私の職場でも、外国人教員に話しかけたり話しかけられることを躊躇する日本人教員は多い。
英語が話せない、という不安感によるものだろう。
自然に外国人教員は孤立しがちだ。
彼らはどのようなサポートを必要としているのだろうか。
まず学校のルールやしきたり。
出退勤の仕方（タイムカードなのか、捺印する形式なのか、など）や成績のつけ方、コーヒーの淹れ方に至るまで。
特に外国人になってみて思うのだが、簡単な掲示ですら外国人教員たちが読めるとは限らない。
ホームルーム担任を一緒に組むときや教科担当を一緒に組んでいるときは積極的に彼らをサポートしていかなければならない。
特に困っているようすが見受けられたのは職員会議や社内メールでくる書類が日本語で書かれている場合だ。
常勤講師以上であれば、行事の役割に当たることも多い。
非常勤講師であれば、行事によって出勤がなくなったりすることもある。
日本人であっても見落とすことがあるこのようなことは分かっていると思っても一緒に確認するべきである。
もうひとつは、職員室や日本ならではのしきたりである。
これは学校によってさまざまある。
出勤や退勤はギリギリにならないようにする、とか、体育祭の日は白いポロシャツを着なければならない、とか。
これも新任教員に教えるときに忘れずに外国人教員にも伝えなければならない。
学習指導要領について
日本の教育の特徴とも言えるのが学習指導要領(Education Standard)である。
日本のどこにいても同じ水準の教育が受けられるというのが日本の教育の特徴だ。
外国では、学校や先生によって教育の方針や内容が随分変わると聞く。
だから学習指導要領の存在は外国人教員には不思議に映るときがある。
学習指導要領の存在を知らせ、上のリンクからも飛べるが、文部科学省の英訳を参考にしながら何をどのように教えなければならないかを説明する必要がある。
生徒や保護者との関係や立場
生徒も英語が万全ではないから、外国人教員との関係は構築するのに時間がかかる。
私も一番困ったのは生徒と外国人教員がどのように関係を作っていくかである。
生徒に対しては、中学１〜２年生の時は外国人教員ができるだけ表に出るように振る舞った。
中学３年生時は進路のこともあるから私が前に出る機会も多くなったように思う。
保護者に対しては徹底的に私が前に出るようにした。
例えどれだけ日本語が堪能な外国人教員だとしても、ニュアンスの違いから揚げ足を取られることもある。
外国人教員のミスで保護者とトラブルになったとしても日本人教員が対応すべきである。

Even if you think you know these things, which even Japanese people sometimes overlook, you should check them together.
The second is the staff room and Japanese customs.
This varies from school to school.
For example, it is important not to arrive and leave work too late, or to wear a white polo shirt on the day of a sports festival.
When teaching new teachers, we must not forget to tell this to foreign teachers as well.

In the third year of junior high school, I had more opportunities to be in front of the students because of their career paths.
I made it a point to be in front of the parents.
No matter how fluent the foreign teacher was in Japanese, he or she could be taken to task for nuances.
Even if a foreign teacher makes a mistake and gets into trouble with the parents, a Japanese teacher should handle the situation.
