Dali Unbelievable! We Americans never eat salad for breakfast. But I know you Japanese people like to eat salad, even in the morning. Let me relate to you a fascinating story concerning this.
ダリちゃん 信じられない！ わしらアメリカ人は朝食にサラダは絶対食べないよ。でも、あんたら日本人はサラダを食べるの好きだろう？ 朝でさえも。それに関して、とても面白い話をしてあげるよ。

Dai This happened about 20 years ago when I first came to Japan. While walking on the street past a Japanese kissaten, I saw the “Morning set” display in front. It was toast, egg, coffee, and salad. This kissaten was offering salad for breakfast! Unbelievable! I thought that this was a bizarre coffee shop. Of course, this must be their idea of a joke, I thought.
ダリちゃん わしが初めて来日した20年ぐらい前の事なんだ。通りを歩ていて日本の喫茶店の前を通り過ぎた時、店の前の「モーニングセット」のディスプレイを見たんだ。トーストと卵、コーヒー、それにサラダだったんだ。この喫茶店、朝食にサラダを出してたんだよ！ 信じられない！ 変なコーヒーショップだと思った。もちろん、冗談でそうしているのだと思った。

私 サラダはモーニングセットには必須だよ。
Dali Please be quiet. So later, during a private lesson in a tiny English language school, which was my workplace at that time, I told the student about it. I said, “I saw a hilarious thing on my way to work today. Hahaha. There was a coffee shop offering a Morning set meal with a salad! Hahaha.” I laughed, but my student didn’t laugh. She was adorable but said, “Dali-chan-sensei, you are a very handsome boy, but you are a fool! What’s wrong with salad for breakfast? It’s not strange. Almost every kissaten offers a Morning set with salad.”
ダリちゃん ちょっと黙っててくれないか。で、のちに、当時働いていた小規模な英会話教室でのプライベートレッスンの時に、そのことを生徒に言ったんだ。「今日仕事に来る途中、無茶苦茶面白いものを見たんだ。ハ、ハ、ハ。コーヒーショップでモーニングセットにサラダだって！ ハ、ハ、ハ」と。わしは笑った。でもその生徒は笑わなかった。彼女は愛らしかったが「ダリちゃん先生、先生はとてもハンサムだけどバカだわ。朝食にサラダの何が悪いの？ 変じゃないわ。ほとんどの喫茶店のモーニングセットにサラダがついてるわ」と言った。

Dali Please be quiet! At that point, I almost fainted. I was so shocked to hear that. I then realized that this must be a part of a very strange Japanese custom. The Japanese typical breakfast consists, of course, of miso soup, rice, fish, and tsukemono. That’s Japanese style. But if they want to have Western style, it might be eggs, bacon, and toast. But salad is ABSOLUTELY not part of the Western-style breakfast. My student then asked me, “Why don’t you eat salad for breakfast?” I replied, “It’s quite clear. Because eating salad for breakfast is so strange!” That was the first time I realized Japanese people are VERY STRANGE.
ダリちゃん 頼むから黙っててくれないか！ その時わしは気絶しそうだった。それを聞いて無茶苦茶びっくりした。で、わしはこれは日本のとても変な習慣に違いないと気づいた。日本の典型的な朝食は、もちろん、味噌汁、ごはん、魚と漬物だ。それが日本流。でももし西洋流が良ければ、卵、ベーコンとトーストだね。でもサラダは絶対に西洋流の朝食には含まれないね。で、その生徒はわしに「どうして朝食にサラダを食べないの？」と尋ねた。わしは「そんなの決まってるじゃない。だって朝食にサラダを食べるってとても変だからさ！」と答えた。それがわしが日本人はとても変わってると思った初めての経験だった。

At first, I doubted Dali’s assertion that Americans don’t eat salad for breakfast. So, I checked his truthfulness on the Internet and found that he was correct. But for me, as a Japanese, I like to eat salad for breakfast, especially one that consists of shredded cabbage and petit tomatoes.
初めは「アメリカ人は朝食にサラダを食べない」というダリちゃんの主張に疑問を感じた。で、ネットでその真偽のほどをチェックしたところ正しいことが分かった。でも日本人の僕にとって、朝食にはサラダを食べたい。特に千切りキャベツとプチトマトのサラダをね。
