Before 1971, the Kennedy half dollar was made of either 90% or 40% silver, depending on the year. Because of this, most of these have been removed from circulation by hoarders and speculators. Second, the half-dollar coin is not well-liked by the public due to its sheer size and weight. In addition, vending machines commonly do not accept them. Finally, many cashiers, thinking it is not real US currency, do not accept the half-dollar coin.
