McDonald’s announced recently that it is piloting a new cafe concept called “CosMc’s”.
CosMc’s is named after CosMc, a little-known McDonald’s character from the 1980s.
CosMc’s will mostly sell indulgent, highly customizable caffeinated beverages with some food.
Why is McDonald’s suddenly interested in selling sugary coffee drinks?
Why is McDonald’s launching an entirely new brand?
McDonald’s is taking this approach because the widely customizable coffee drinks – like the kind Starbucks is known for – are a lucrative market.
McDonald’s can’t plop these customizable coffee drinks onto the menu.
Doing that would slow down kitchens and service times.
However the profit margin on a beverage is just humongous.
Plus, when people visit a cafe for a drink, they often end up buying something to eat.
One of top managers says,
Coffeeshops are a growing category in the US, so McDonald’s doesn’t want to be left behind.
CosMc’s has the types of customizable espresso drinks, teas and other beverages.
The first location is in Bolingbrook, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, with about 10 additional locations set to open in Texas in 2024.
It's not clear yet whether CosMc's will expand beyond the Illinois and Texas locations.
It seems like it will be a long time before we can drink those customizable coffee drinks at CosMc's.
