キウイフルーツ Kiwi Fruits

 20年ほど前に、キウイフルーツ、オスとメス2本の木を買って、家に植えました。
I bought two kiwi trees (male & female) about 20 years ago and planted it in my small yard.

キウイは成長がとても早いのですが、家の庭はものすごく狭いので、ガレージの軒下に枝を這わせることにしました。初めのうちは、花はたくさん咲くのですが、実はあまり成りませんでした。
Kiwi trees grow quickly, but my yard is so small that I tried to make the branches crwal under the eaves of the carport.  Though they bloomed in spring, they didn't bear fruits so much at first.

garage=ｶﾞﾗｰｼﾞ＝ガレージ、（自動車の車庫）
carport=カーポート（garageと違い差し掛け屋根のみの簡易車庫)

雄花には雌蕊（めしべ）がなく、葯（やく）（おしべの先端部にある、花粉を包む袋状のもの）のふたを爆発させるように開きます。
Male 〔staminate〕flowers, which don't have pistils.  You can see yellow fluffy things with pollen in the middle.

授粉しないと、実は小さいまま落ちてしまうので、2～3年前から人工授粉を始めました。
まず、雄花をいくつか取って、お椀に入れました。それから、花粉を、習字の筆を使ってたっぷり取り、雌花の柱頭（めしべの先端部）1つ1つにつけました。最後に、授粉に成功して、多くの実が‼

If female flowers are not pollinated, tiny fruits drop without growing bigger. So I decided to start artificial pollination a few years ago.
At first I took off some male flowers and kept it in a bowl.  Then I put pollen on a stigma of female flowers one by one with a writing brush.  Finally I succeeded in pollinating female floweres and my kiwi tree bore many fruits!

8月には実は大きくなるのですが、10月下旬から11月上旬ごろまでは、そのまま木の上で熟成させます。

Fruits become big enough by August, but you have to wait until the end of October or the beginning of November so that they ripen enough.

うちのキウイは、皮が毛羽だっていて、実が緑色のヘイワードという品種です。そして、今年は豊作でした
でも、キウイは追熟が必要とのことで、あと、2～3週間、室温に置いておく必要があります

My kiwi is called Hayward, which has a fuzzy, dull-brown skin, and bright-green flesh.  This year  I had a large harvest! 
As kiwi fruits need afterripening, you need to keep them for two or three weeks at room temperature. 

fuzzy=《形》毛羽だった
fluffy=《形》けばのような、綿毛の、ふわふわした
afterripening=後熟《収穫後の果実・種子に起こる》

さらに、普通、食べるには実が固すぎるので、1つのキウイに傷をつけ、食べたいキウイと一緒にビニール袋に入れ、4日から7日程、キウイが柔らかくなるまで、待たなくてはなりません。本当、時間がかかります。でも、栄養豊富で美味しいですよ

Moreover, before eating kiwi fruits, you should scratch the skin of one fruit, put it in a plastic bag with other kiwis which you want to eat, and wait until they become softer...about 4 to 7 days. It takes time!

But the Kiwi is nutritious and yummy!
