菩薩嶺に 月太るなり エルサレム

この句は私の禅の師匠、中川宋淵老師がその著書「十句」の中で詠んでいられる句です。老師はこの本の中で次の様に述べられています。
「人間お互い菩薩なんですから。菩薩というのは菩提薩埵を略したもの。菩提というのは「まことの智恵」「悟り」と訳されています。薩埵というのは「人」のこと-人だけに限ったことでなないけれども。人間がお互いが本来の天真爛漫な心になって、そして見たり、聞いたり、それを菩提というのであって、お互い人間が菩薩さま。せっかくの菩薩である人間が、修羅道、即ち 憎しみあったり、あげくの果ては殺しあったり、さらに大量殺戮で戦争をやったりするのは、もう人間ではないですよ。畜生以下です。人間ほど悪い動物は地球上にいない。それを自覚しなければいけない。自分勝手なことばかりして。人間は万物の霊長です。菩薩ともなり、仏ともなる力もまた持っている。それが人間なのです。」さらに「死海でお茶を立てたことがある。お盆を並べて、二、三人の友達と。アラブとイスラエルの首相とをお客にしてお茶を点てたらよかろうと思うのですが。- - - -。」
この文面から判る様に、老師は、ユダヤ教、キリスト教、回教の聖地であるエルサレムで、日本の大菩薩嶺に似た山に上る満月を見ながら、菩薩である人間が殺戮を繰り返している現状を憂え、出来ることなら、この地でお互いに殺戮を繰り返しているアラブとイスラエルの首相にお茶を点て、戦争を直ちに停止するように望まれたということです。老師は大菩薩嶺に近い山梨県甲州市の向岳寺で、1931年24歳で出家されてから、大菩薩嶺の山中に、富士山を一望できる禅堂を建てようという志を持っていられたのです。お弟子さんたちが、その志を継ぎ、アメリカではニューヨーク州で、市の中心から北に車で3時間のところにある大菩薩禅堂金剛寺（Catskill Mountainsの中にある560haの敷地を有するお寺--Zeroxの創始者(スエーデ人)の寄進により建立された）が建立されています。老師は1984年に遷化されるまで、度々、ニューヨークとエルサレムに坐禅の指導に行かれました。カトリックのお坊さんに請われたケースもあります。
鈴木大拙氏が、1897年渡米され、「禅と日本文化主」を英語で発刊され、禅の普及を始められて以来、老師の様な献身的な禅僧の方々の努力により、禅は世界中に広がっています。
顕著な例は、ローマーカトリック協会に属する聖母宣教者修道会の修道女が、宣教と禅の研究のため、1961年来日し、山田耕雲老師を見出し、山田耕雲老師の薫陶のもとで、20年にわたって研鑽され、印可証明を受け、禅の公認指導者となられました。彼女は、Elaine MacInnes（イレーヌ・マキネス）といい，ローマーカトリック協会の修道女でありながら、禅の指導を続け、最近では、（Prison Phoenix Trust の要請を受けて）イギリスの刑務所の囚人に禅の指導をし、囚人の中には素晴らしい人間になっていく人が輩出していると報じられています。彼女の英文の本が日本語に翻訳され、一昨年「禅入門」（岩波書店発行--イレーヌ・マキネス著；堀沢祖門（天台宗大僧正）、石村 巽（ゆずる）（慶応大学医学部教授）、吉岡美紗緒（精神科医）、田中正夫（シヴァナンダ・ヨーガ教師）共訳）として発行された。私もこの本を読み、深く感銘を受けました。興味のある方は是非購入され精読してください。
最近、オサマ・ビン・ラディン氏が殺害され、話題になっていますが、9.11事件は確かにアメリカにとってショックだったことは理解できますが、戦争による報復は、双方に、直接戦争に従事しなければならない人たちは勿論、罪も無い第3者を含む、際限の無い、拡大し続ける、大量殺戮をもたらす、報復合戦に発展するだけであることは、明白な事実です。アラブ世界が男女の平等、義務教育、機会均等を実現すれば、非常に少ない原理主義者達が、その教育された国民を煽動することは出来ないでしょう。アラブ世界がその様な方向に向けるように援助をすること以外に道は無いのです。前述のイレーヌ・マキネス修道女の本「禅入門」の中で、彼女は日本の偉大な道元禅師の言葉「明らかに知りぬ、心とは山河大地なり、日月星辰なり」を日毎に鮮明に感じられる様になってきていると言われています。ここで彼女がどの様に感じているかを我々は認識することが出来ます。もしユダヤ教、キリスト教、回教のお坊さん達に禅が広まり、イレーヌ・マキネス修道女の様に感じてくれるならば、我々は戦争の無い平和な世界を実現できるでしょう。
そのような世界を早く実現するべく努力しようではありませんか。
My Zen teacher, Zen-priest Rev. Nakagawa, Sohen announced this poem in his book "Ten poems (Japanese 'Haiku')".Regarding this poem he mentioned in the book as follows.
"Human being is a bodhisattva who try his best to attain his enlightenment and to guide the other people to that of their own. Nonetheless that human being hates, and in the end kill one another. Further in the worst case they make war of general massacre. They are no more human beings. They are inferior to animals. There is no creature more cruel than human being on the earth. They have to be aware to this fact.------.
Human being is the lord of creation. Potentially he can be a bodhisattva, and a Buddha if he earnestly try his best. Human being is such a being.-----. I held tea party with a few friends in the dead sea . If situation had permitted, I would have served tea to the prime ministers of Israel and Arabic world in the dead sea, after inviting them there.------."
As you can easily understand from the above context, he wanted, if possible, to serve tea to the prime ministers of Israel and Arabic world in Dead Sea, and to persuade them to stop war immediately, deploring why Israel and PLO are making interminable war in Jerusalem, holy land of Judaism, Christianity, and Moslem, while he was seeing a beautiful full moon rising over a mountain in Jerusalem. Ever since he became Zen-priest at the age of 24 at the temple called "Kohgakuji" in Kohshuh City, Yamanashi , near Mount Fuji, in 1931, he had been having an ambition of making a Zen-Buddhism temple dedicated to Zen-meditation in the mountain of "Daibosaturei" from where magnificent Mount Fuji can be looked up at. His followers have inherited his ambition and one of them had achieve to build a great temple called "Daibosatsu Zen Temple" in Catskill Mountains, New York state, located at 3-hour-drive distance to the north from New York City Center, having the area of 560 ha (hectares) (a square of one side 2.4km) thanks to the donation of Swedish founder of Zerox Company.
Rev. Nakagawa, Sohen have visited New York and Jerusalem many times to propagate Buddhism through Zen-meditation till he died in 1984. In some cases Catholic priests asked him to teach Zen-meditation. As the forerunner of Buddhism propagation, Mr. Suzuki,Daisetsu went to US in 1897 and published his book "Zen and Japanese culture" and started to spread Buddhism in Europe and US. Since then thanks to the dedicated efforts of Zen-priests like Rev. Nakagawa, Sohen, Zen-Buddhism has been spreading all over the world.
As an example of exemplifying this fact, I found out the following case.
A sister named Elaine MacInnes from a Canadian convent belonging to Roman Catholic Church came to Japan as a missionary and also to study Zen, found out a good Zen-priest named Rev. Yamada, Kohun, and trained herself under guidance of him for 20 years, got enlightened and Rev. Yamada, Kohun certified she was a licensed Zen-Buddhism sister and asked her to spread Zen-Buddhism. She returned to Canada and has been continuing her missionary life as a Catholic sister and at the same time guiding her parishioners to practise Zen-meditation.
Since 1992 she started to teach prisoners Zen-meditation in Great Britain accepting the request of the Prison Phoenix Trust and it is reported that from among the prisoners, many splendid personalities have been being born. Her English book "Guidance to Zen" was translated and published in Japan in 2009 (Iwanami Publishing Company issued this book. Its co-translators are Daisohjoh Horizawa, Somon(Tendai-shuh), Professor Ishimura,Yuzuru (Keioh University Medicine Faculty), Mr. Yoshioka, Misao (psychiatrist), and Mr. Tanaka, Misao (Shyvananda Yoga teacher).I bought and read this book and was deeply impressed. Recently Mr.Osama bin Laden was killed and the news stirred the world. Indeed US people were shocked at September 11 World Trade Center Explosion Scheme by al-Qaeda and well they might. Nonetheless it is self-evident that vengeance by war will surely lead to interminable ever-escalating mutual revenge repetition, killing innumerable innocent 3rd party people as well as many of the people who have to directly engage themselves in war, on both parties . If Arabic world realizes equality of sexes, compulsory education, and equal opportunity, very scarce fundamentalists will not be able to instigate their own educated people. We have no other choice than helping them do so. In the above-mentioned book "Guidance to Zen", Sister Elaine MacInnes says that she is feeling more and more vividly day by day the words "I clearly perceive that My spirit is mountain, river and earth; and sun ,moon and stars " written by great Japanese Zen-priest Dohgen. Here we can recognize how she is feeling. If Zen-Buddhism spreads further over the world and Moslim, Christian, and Judaism priests feel like she does, we will be able to realize a peaceful world without war. Let us go ahead and do our best to implement such a world.
