国が愛国を唱え市民がそれに同調する時は危険である
平和を望むのは市民であるが、戦争を起こすのは必ず国である。政治も宗教も市民を幸福に導くためのものである。それにも拘らず、そのための装置やシステムが貴重で公平で高貴な機能であるからといって、そのための犠牲を政府が求めるのは限度を超えていると言える。
しかしながら、単なる概念でしかない政府が、増長し自惚れて愛国を唱えるようになると、極めて危険である。愛国心は、国民に戦費を出させ、戦場に赴かせるための有効な手段にもなるからである。
It is dangerous when the country claims patriotism and the citizens go along with it.
Citizens want peace, but it always is the country that makes war. Both politics and religion are meant to lead citizens to happiness. In spite of this, it can be said that the government's demand for sacrifices for this purpose exceeds the limit just because the devices and systems for that purpose are valuable, fair, and noble functions.
However, government, which is a mere conception, is extremely dangerous when it becomes augmented, conceited and patriotic. This is because patriotism is also an effective means of making people pay for war and go to the battlefield.
