DX Direct Democracy (Blind Spots of Political Reform)
When Diet members debate political reform, they often seem to focus on improvements in narrow areas, such as issues of political funding and hereditary succession.
However, politics is not just the business of Diet members. It is also carried out by bureaucrats in Kasumigaseki and local government officials. Japan has been overtaken by Germany in terms of GDP, but the country has about two-thirds the population and roughly the same GDP.
Diet members are accustomed to saying that in politics, results are important, but how do they explain this situation?
The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed the reality of fax usage, and the tendency to continue supporting zombie companies, the indifference of young people to politics, the continuing decline in the birthrate, etc. The political performance is so poor that it makes you wonder if government really exists. Isn't the bigger issue why politics are performing so poorly?
