lay and pray

友達のShawnは、ニューヨークで総合格闘技をやってる男性。

My friend Shawn is an MMA fighter who lives in NY.



ある時、自分のFace Bookのページに、こんな質問を載せた。

He posted his question on Face Book the other day.

「Who is the top lay and pray fighter?
　 I have ＊＊＊ as #1」

　（誰が１番の「レイ＆プレイ」選手だと思う？
　　僕は＊＊＊が１番だと思うな）
と。



最初、lay and prayがわからなかったので、聞いたら

テイクダウンした後、積極的に一本取りに行ったり、
パスしてもっといいポジションを取りに行ったり、
パウンドで攻めたりせず
ただ、上に乗って、
相手をコントロールしてる様に見せて
実は判定で勝つのを待ってる選手のこと
だそうです(;^_^A

（なるほど、「倒れて、祈る」選手ね。。。）

I couldn't answer at first because I didn't know the meaning of
'lay and pray'. So I asked him to explain.

He said 'lay and pray' means
when a fighter takes down his opponent and just lays on top of him
and just looks to control him,
not going for submissions or ground and pound
or even trying to pass into another position
and just praying that he will win the fight by decision

OK, I see. Just lay and pray to win...



「そういう選手は、日本だとファンを失うよ」
と書いたら、大勢のFace Book友達が
「そうだよね！」って返事くれて。

I posted my comment like
"Lay and pray type of fighters will lose
their fans immediately in Japan"
Then many friends on FB replied and
agreed with me.


Shawnは、自分の試合が映ってる
youtubeの動画のURLを教えてくれて

「これ、見てみて
　まさにこれが
lay and prayのお手本だね」

だってさ(;^_^A

Shawn sent me the URL of his video on youtube
and said

"Look at this,
This is the perfect example of
lay and pray."

I couldn't help giggling.
He is funny.



昨日のパンクラス
「lay and prayの選手は一人もいなかった。
　Shawnも日本で試合しなよ」って伝えた。

「日本で闘いたいよ」ってさ。


I told him that Pancrase yesterday was fun.
There was no lay and pray fighting.
"Why don't you come here and fight?"

Then he said he would like to.

ほんと、昨日のパンクラス、楽しかった。
全部、いい試合ばっかりだったけど

I had fun yesterday.
All the bouts were exciting.


今回は、特に特に
赤井太志朗さん、大石真丈さん、松永義弘さん、
徳留一樹さんが印象的だった、かな。

Especially
Tashiro Akai, Masahiro Oishi, Yoshihiro Matsunaga
were very impressive to my eye.

江泉さんvs松永さんは、お２人ともとても小柄なフライ級の選手。
でも、大晦日の、ヘビー級の石井vsバンナの試合より
ずっとずっと、見応えがあって、迫力もあった。

Eizumi vs Matsunaga was great.
They were two shortest fighters in Pancrase.
Yet their fight was much more exciting and interesting to watch
than the heavy weight match of Ishii vs LeVanner
on New Year's Eve....Gee

「なんだかな～～～」って、思っちゃうわ。
現時点の知名度はどうあれ、ああいうエキサイティングな
試合を放送すべきだよ。そうしたら「あぁ、面白かったな」
という印象が観た人に残るんだもん。
そしたら、次、また見てみようと思うじゃん。

I don't know what to say.
I think TV should show great fights like the one
of Eizumi vs Matsunaga even though they are not
very famous at the moment.

Their fight was exciting enough to give
the viewers good impression about MMA
and I am sure they might want to watch MMA
event again.

赤井さんと佐藤さんも、素晴しかったよ。
赤井さんはいつも、素晴しい。
彼は前にしか行かない。後ろにひかない。
すごい。

Tashiro Akai and Takenori Sato were great too.
Akai is always great. He never gets scared back.
He always goes forward.
Great.

ShawnはWing Chun（詠春）という中国の格闘技をやっていますが
MMAもやってます。いつかカンフーの先生になりたいそうです。

Shawn is practicing a Chinese combative sport
called Wing Chun, He wants to become a Kung Fu teacher
some day.
