Good morning and thank you very much for your time to stop by English Plus blog!
English Plus is a small language school located in Tamachi, Tokyo.
We're providing fun, student-centered, practical English lessons.
Today, I'd like to continue writing about one of my children's story and how to raise children in English on this English Plus blog.
As I wrote down in the previous blog, before my children were born, I had had a vague idea that when I had children, I would try to communicate with them in English as much as possible.
This is because I was wondering, “If Japanese parents communicate with their children in English while they are in Japan, how much English ability will their children acquire?”
Also, “Will the following child-rearing methods actually help my child acquire English language skills?
Plus, “What is the right answer to raise kids in English?"
I had my own questions, so I decided to actually work on them.
In our home, I, as a father, communicate only in English, and the mother communicates basically in Japanese, sometimes in English.
We do not force the children to speak in English, as our idea is that "English is only a communication tool", but only when they want to communicate in English.
Although I have created an English learning environment for my child in the above general manner, there was one thing that I had been wondering me sometime.
That is, “How good is my child's English level now?”
In fact, since my child and I were able to make a little time for each other, I first let the child try the “listening past exam questions” without parental help.
How well can a child who has never seen or heard of any English test questions at all do?
How well could the child do it in an environment where his father was speaking one-sidedly in English (non-native vocabulary and pronunciation)?
The experiment of raising a child in English was eight years and six months old at that time.
The actual listening question we tested at that time was Eiken level 3.
Eiken level 3 is the standard level for graduation from junior high school.
During the actual test, my child sometimes lost concentration and said, “I don't know what I'm reading,” but he managed to complete the 25-minute listening test.
As a result, the percentage of correct answers was about 90%.
When we were going over the answers together, we found that many of the words in the questions could not be read clearly, so we were able to confirm the need for more phonics study, the need to increase vocabulary, and the need to master verb forms (past tense and past participle forms), etc.
I would like to continue to support our kids in acquiring English so that it will come naturally to them, rather than as a preconceived notion of learning.
For those of you who read this blog and are trying your best to raise your children in English as a parent, let's continue to do our best for each other.
