Dali I thought about today’s topic when I came here to meet you. As always, I rode my bicycle to the station, where there is a parking lot, and paid a small fee.

Dali But for a long time, I have not used a lock, because two years ago, my lock broke. As the lock was very strong and expensive, I wanted to get it repaired. But in fact, I never got around to getting it repaired. So for two years, I’ve never locked my bicycle.

Dali But my bicycle has never been stolen! I have a theory as to why this might be, and today’s topic arises from this theory.

Dali It has been my observation that Japanese people ride bicycles with the seat set too low. Do you know what I mean?

Dali As you know, the height of a bicycle seat can be adjusted. However, many Japanese people, adults and children, ride bicycles with the seat set too low. What is the correct height for bicycle seat? I will tell you. As you know, our legs go round on the crank from top to bottom. When the leg reaches the bottom, it should be almost straight; it should be only very slightly bent.
ダリちゃん 自転車のシートの高さは調節できること知ってるよね。でもね、日本人の多くは、大人も子供も、シートを低くしすぎで運転しているんだよね。自転車のシートの正しい高さはどれだけかって？ 教えてあげよう。知っての通り、わしらの脚はクランクの回りを上から下へと回転する。脚が最低地点に達した時、ほぼ真っすぐでなければならない。つまり、ほんの少しだけ曲がっていなければならない。

Dali Americans, from childhood, know this. I think even elementary school children are taught that the bicycle seat should be adjusted high enough for the legs to be almost straight at the bottom of each revolution.
ダリちゃん アメリカ人は子供の時からそのことを知っている。小学校の子供でも回転の最低地点で脚がほとんど真っすぐになるように自転車のシートを高く調節すべきという事を教えられていると思う。
Me I didn’t know that.

Dali Most Japanese people do not do this, despite the fact that this is the most efficient way to ride a bicycle, enabling one’s legs to travel at their full motion. The Japanese do not do this, resulting in a very tiring and uncomfortable ride. But, apparently, nobody teaches the Japanese about the optimal height of the bicycle seat.
ダリちゃん ほとんどの日本人はそうしないね。そうすることが、脚の運動を全開にするという最も効率的に自転車に乗る方法であるにもかかわらず。日本人はそうしない。だから自転車に乗っていてとても疲れるし気持ちよくない。でも明らかに誰も日本人に自転車のシートの最適の高さを教えない。
Me I didn’t realize that riding a bicycle is tiring because I ride an electric bike.
私 僕は電動自転車に乗っているので疲れは感じなかったけどなあ。
Dali I once saw a small child with his father in the park, and the child was riding a very small bicycle. The seat was all the way down and the child’s legs were extraordinarily bent, even at the low point of crank revolution, and the father did nothing. He didn’t help his son to adjust the seat because, apparently, he didn’t realize that there was a problem.
ダリちゃん わしはかつて公園で小さな子供が父親といるのを見た。子供はとても小さな自転車に乗っていた。シートは一番下になっていて、クランクの回転の最低地点でも子供の脚は無茶苦茶曲がっていた。でも父親は何もしなかった。父親は息子のシートを調節してあげなかった。明らかに父親は、問題があると認識していなかったから。

Dali Anyway, I have adjusted my bicycle seat so that my legs are in full range of motion. This makes cycling much more efficient. But when I do this, my bicycle seat comes to a level higher than any other bicycle seat I see in the bicycle parking lot. Of course, it is not because I have particularly long legs. In fact, my legs are rather short. But if somebody looks at my bicycle, and sees how high the seat is, he probably thinks that the bicycle belongs to a giant. So I think any potential thief would be afraid to steal the bicycle. Imagine what might go through the mind of a potential thief. He would likely think that this is a bicycle owned by a giant. He might think to himself, “If the owner noticed me stealing the bicycle, he would chase me, seize me, and likely kill me. No, no! No thank you.” Anyway, that is my theory as to why my bicycle has never been stolen.
ダリちゃん とにかく、わしは脚が最大限に動かせるよう自転車のシートを調節していた。そうすることでサイクリングがずっと効率的になる。でもそうするとわしの自転車のシートは自転車置き場で見る他のどの自転車のシートよりも高くなっている。もちろんこれはわしが特に足が長いからではない。実はわしの脚はむしろ短い。でももし他人がわしの自転車を見てシートがどれだけ高いか見たら、その自転車は巨人のものとおそらく思うだろう。それで、泥棒は怖がってその自転車を盗まないだろう。泥棒がどう思うか想像してみよう。彼はその自転車の持ち主は巨人だと多分思うだろう。で、心の中でひそかに考えるだろう。「もし自分がその自転車を盗むところを持ち主に気づかれれば、持ち主は自分を追いかけて、捕まえて、殺しかねない。ダメダメ。ごめんだね」と。とにかく、これが「なぜわしの自転車が盗まれないのか？」に関してのわしの考え。

I don’t think that Dali is taller than the average American guy, but he is still taller than the average Japanese man. That is why, when the bicycle seat is adjusted according to his instructions, it becomes so high. I postulate that the thief would simply doesn’t want to steal such a conspicuous bicycle.
僕は、ダリちゃんが平均的なアメリカ人男性に比べ背が高いとは思わないが、平均的な日本人男性よりは背が高いと思う。それで、ダリちゃんの言う通りに自転車のシートを調節した際、シートがとても高くなったんだと思う。泥棒はただ単にそんな目立つ自転車を盗みたくないだけだと僕は思う。
