Dali Well, I really like Japanese Obakes, but before talking about it, we should describe the meaning of Obake in English. How do you say Obake in English?
ダリちゃん そうだなあ。わしは日本のお化けが大好き。でもお化けについて話す前にお化けの英語での意味をはっきりさせなきゃね。お化けって英語で何て言う？

Dali Ghost? Maybe, ghosts are one type of Obake. But there are many Obakes which are not ghosts. For example, Frankenstein is one kind of Obake. He’s definitely not a ghost, but rather is a monster in English. A monster is a big and powerful, dangerous being. Dracula may be a kind of Obake, and is similar to a ghost, in that he is related to death. But, in English, he might be more properly called a ghoul. Frankenstein is definitely not a ghoul. Another example of a ghoul is the zombie. Anyway, my point is that, to me, Japanese Obake comes from a very unique Japanese idea. Thus, I think, there is no English word that exactly translates to Obake.

Dali I like Japanese Obakes. For example, the Umbrella Obake, the Chouchin Obake, the Long-Neck Woman, who is to me, a ghoul. In contrast, the Umbrella Obake and Chouchin Obake are not ghouls.

Dali Well, first of all, ghouls have human characteristics. Zombies have human bodies, and Dracula has a human shape. Regarding the Long-Neck Woman, she is human but has a long neck.

Dali Not necessarily. Another characteristic of the ghoul is that they be ugly. Yuki Onna is a being that is very beautiful. And, of course, ghouls must also be scary. Anyway, Japanese Obakes, to me, are very interesting because these creatures were created with much imagination. On the contrary, creatures from an American horror movie, such as Dracula, Frankenstein, zombies, etc., are very boring to me. American horror movies are scary and exciting only for very young people. They are superficial, emphasizing the ugliness of monsters or ghouls, and rely heavily on bloody violence. American horror movies are actually kind of boring, if we understand that the movies are not real, blood is not real, and nobody is really dying.

Dali Exorcism comes from the Christian idea of the devil, a religious entity. In my experience, an exorcist is always a priest and the exorcism is connected to Catholicism. In the movie, the priest holds a cross on the head of a girl who is possessed by the devil, to exorcise the devil with prayers like, “I say in the name of Jesus Christ….” Sometimes, on the girl’s head, smoke comes out with the sound of burning. It’s the same old routine, always. How boring!
ダリちゃん 悪魔祓いは宗教上の悪魔と言うキリスト教の考えから来ているんだ。わしの経験上、悪魔祓いの祈祷師はいつも神父で悪魔祓いはカトリック教と結びついているんだ。映画では神父は、悪魔にとりつかれた女の子の額に十字架を当てて、悪魔祓いをするんだ。「イエスキリストの名において……」とか祈りながら。時には、女の子の額の上で「ジュッ」という焼ける音とともに煙が出てくる。昔からいつものお決まりのシーン。なんてつまんない！

私 あっそう。日本のホラー映画で記憶に残っているのある？
Dali When I first came to Japan, for a few years, I couldn’t speak or understand Japanese so much. In my room, I had a television. And one evening, on the TV, there was a Japanese horror movie. Even though I couldn’t understand the words, I could see what was happening. It was very scary. I don’t remember the name of the movie. I don’t even remember why I was scared. I just vaguely recall some scenes.
ダリちゃん わしが初めて日本に来た時、2-3年間は日本語があまり喋れたり理解したりできなかった。わしの部屋にはテレビがあったんだ。ある晩、テレビで日本のホラー映画をやってたんだ。何を言っているのかわからなかったけど、何が起こっているかは理解できた。とっても怖かった。映画の名前は覚えていないけど。何で怖かったのかさえ覚えていないけど。いくつかのシーンはおぼろげながら覚えている。

Dali Apart from the innominate horror movie, there is a very fearfully-done Japanese horror movie, which is famous. It is the basis of the American movie, The Ring. This was a recent Japanese movie, but, was re-done by Hollywood. The scene that I remember is the Japanese Obake crawling with hands. Unlike an American horror movie, which is scary and exciting for only very young people, this Japanese horror movie was even shocking and scary for adults. Furthermore, unlike American horror movies, it has a story, which made me feel interested.
ダリちゃん 名もわからないホラー映画はそのぐらいにしておいて、有名なとても怖い日本のホラー映画がある。アメリカ映画なんだけど「ザ・リング」って言うんだ。最近の日本の映画だったんだけどハリウッドでリメイクされたんだ。わしが覚えているのは日本のお化けが両手で這っているシーン。本当に若い子だけが怖がって興奮するアメリカのホラー映画とは違って、この日本のホラー映画は大人でもショッキングで怖い。さらに、アメリカのホラー映画と違って、ちゃんとしたストーリーがあるので面白い。

Dali There is another horror movie that I recently saw, which is in my computer. The title is 1408. This story is about a haunted room in a hotel, The Dolphin. The main character, Mike, is a writer, who debunks ghosts. He arrives at The Dolphin and requests room 1408. The hotel manager says, “Don’t stay in that room. Anybody who has stayed in that room has died, or has become permanently insane.” But Mike laughs, saying that he doesn’t believe such things. He says, “It’s good. It’s OK. I’ll stay in this room, sleep well, get up fine tomorrow morning. I’ll be hungry, so I will book breakfast for tomorrow now.” But, of course, the room turned out to have been haunted. It was true. Many unexpected things happened. The plot was not that of a simple American horror movie. It was deep. What was described in the movie was a world, within a world, within a world. It was very complex. Although it’s an American horror movie, it has a Japanese flavor. So, I like it.
ダリちゃん わしが最近見たもう一つのホラー映画がある。わしのPCに入っているけど。タイトルは「1408」。「ザ・ドルフィン」というホテルの呪われた部屋についてのストーリーだ。主役はライターのマイク。幽霊の正体を暴露するのが仕事だ。彼は「ザ・ドルフィン」に着くと1408号をリクエストする。ホテルの支配人は「この部屋はだめです。この部屋に泊まった人はみんな死ぬか、精神異常者になっていますよ」と言う。でもマイクは笑いながら、そんなことは信じないと言う。彼は「上等、OKだ。私はこの部屋に泊まり、ぐっすり眠って、明日の朝気持ちよく起きるよ。腹が減ってるだろうから、今ここで明日の朝食を予約しておくよ」と言う。でももちろんこの部屋は呪われていたことがわかった。本当だったんだ。予期せぬことがたくさん起こった。話の筋は単純なアメリカのホラー映画の比ではなかった。深いんだよね。映画の中で描写されている世界の中にさらにもう一つの世界があって、その中にさらにもう一つの世界がある。とても複雑だった。これはアメリカのホラー映画だけど日本のホラー映画の趣がある。だから好き。

Dali I don’t know. I don’t remember the ending. But, I would say that I have seen it at least twice.

A long time ago, there was a man, named Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo), who came to Japan as a correspondent for an American company, Harper Publishers. He lived in Japan all his later life. He was very interested in Japanese Obakes, and wrote a book, Kwaidan (a compilation of seventeen ghost stories), in which well-known Obakes such as Rokuro-Kubi (the Long Neck Woman) and Yuki-Onna were described. So, he is probably the first man who introduced Japanese Obakes to Westerners.
In the latter part of the conversation, Dali referred to the horror movie, 1408. Dali said that he didn’t remember the ending. According to what I found on the Internet, there were four alternate endings to this film. These range from a relatively happy ending, in which Mike survives, to a downer ending, where you see Mike’s burnt corpse. The funeral version is used on U.S. iTunes, Netflix and Amazon Prime, whereas the survival version is on the Australian streaming service Presto and on Netflix in Japan. Interesting, isn’t it?
ずっと昔、ラフカディオ・ハーン（小泉八雲）と言う名の人物がいた。彼はアメリカの会社、ハーパー出版社の特派員として来日したのであった。彼は晩年、日本に骨を埋めることになる。彼は日本のお化けにとても興味を持ち、怪談（17のお化けの物話の編集）という本を書いた。その中にはよく知られたお化け例えば、ろくろ首や雪女が描かれていた。つまり、彼は日本のお化けを西洋に知らしめたおそらく最初の人物であろう。
会話の後半では、ダリちゃんはホラー映画の「1408」について言及している。ダリちゃんは、どんなエンディングだったか覚えていないと言っていた。私がネットで調べたところ、4つの異なったエンディングがこの映画にあったそうである。それらは、マイクが生き延びた比較的幸せなエンディングから、マイクが焼けた遺体で見つかる悲しいエンディングまである。葬式バージョンはアメリカのiTune、ネットフリックスやアマゾンプライムで採用されており、生き残るバージョンはオーストラリアのストリーミングサービスであるプレストや日本のネットフリックスで採用されている。面白いね。
