Dali I will give you my opinion, but I first want to make something very clear: I have never used a washlet. Never in my life. Not even once. So my opinion is based purely on conjecture.

Dali Fascinating! Anyway, I have indeed come across toilets with the washlet feature, maybe at a friend’s house or elsewhere. Anyway, after defecating, I absolutely never press the washlet button. I just press the flush button and quickly exit the bathroom. I’ve never used the actual washlet.

Dali First, I’m afraid of using it because I imagine that the water in a washlet can easily spray up away from the anal target. If you are sitting forward or backward a little bit more than the average user, the sprayed water may strike a body part that should not be struck.

Dali Second. Consider the purpose of the washlet. As you know, after the user defecates, some fecal matter still adheres to the anus. So, the purported purpose of the washlet is to wash away that fecal matter. Correct?

Dali OK. So, if the excretion happens to be loose, such as in the case of diarrhea, I think it’s probably effective. But for the very stiff kind of fecal matter, as is the case most often, I don’t think that it can completely wash it all away. It’s very sticky, after all. It just leaves the anus wet with water and feces. So you still have to use toilet paper to wipe the remaining feces away. But when you use the toilet paper at that point, it’ll become wet because the anus is wet. The wet toilet paper disintegrates in your fingers along with the debris of the stool. It’s a mess! So, I have never wanted to try this dangerous gadget.

In Japan, whether it be in hotels, public facilities, offices, or private homes, we find washlets everywhere. I don’t know whether the situation is the same all over the world, but I suppose that washlets are less common in the US. I think part of the reason for their lack of popularity is that the water in the US is far harder (contains far more minerals) than that in Japan, thus making the gadget prone to failure.
日本では、ホテルであれ公共施設やオフィス、個人宅でも、どこでもウォシュレットを見かける。世界中そうだとは思っていないけれど、アメリカではウォシュレットは日本ほど多くはないんじゃないかなと思う。アメリカで人気のない一つの理由として、アメリカの水は日本の水よりずっと硬いので（ずっと多くのミネラルを含むので）ウォシュレットが壊れやすいことが挙げられると思う。
