Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8 could arrive earlier than expected

2017-07-14 10:28:57 | Samsung Galaxy S8

Samsung typically shows off new entries to the powerhouse Galaxy Note iphone glass replacement range at Berlin’s annual IFA technology tradeshow. This means either a very early September launch, or a debut on one of the last two or three days of August. This time, IFA 2017 runs from September 1 to 6, so we were expecting an August 31 launch for the Galaxy Note 8.

However, South Korean news outlet The Investor claims that Samsung has plans to debut the Galaxy Note 8 on August 23, one whole week earlier than expected. The event – which is expected to be a typical ‘Galaxy Unpacked’ affair – is tipped to take place is New York, although the article seems to suggest that sales of the phone won’t actually begin until September.

Samsung’s most recent phone launch took place in March with the Galaxy S8, a phone that has been incredibly well received by critics – we gave it a 5/5 score. As such, offering upgrades over the Galaxy S8 with the Note 8 will be difficult, given the comprehensive design the former already offers.

It’s expected that one of the major changes Samsung will make with the Galaxy Note 8 is the addition of a dual-camera module. This was a feature missed on the Galaxy S8, but offered by rivals like the iPhone 7 Plus, LG G6, OnePlus 5, and Huawei P10.

In any case, Samsung is under plenty of pressure to get the Galaxy Note 8 right, given the fate of the Galaxy Note 7. Last year, Samsung was forced to recall the Note iPhone parts twice, and eventually kill it off completely, on account of users reporting that their handsets were spontaneously combusting. It was later discovered that a battery flaw led to the fires, an issue Samsung will be desperate not to repeat this year.

Unfortunately, we won’t know anything for certain until Samsung makes an official announcement, so take all leaks with due caution until such a time.

For Canada and Mexico users, the new PayPal payment option is now showing up in the accounts settings options. Simply sign in using your existing Apple ID, select the new PayPal option in Accounts Settings, sign into PayPal, finish the authorisation formalities on your device, and make it the default payment option if required.

Once PayPal has been selected, all future purchases with the customer's Apple ID will be automatically charged to their PayPal account. This includes purchases of apps, music, movies, TV shows, and books, as well as Apple Music subscriptions, and even iCloud storage.

“This provides a secure and versatile payment method to meet the growing demand for digital entertainment. PayPal’s availability across Apple’s services further expands our vision of providing customers a variety of ways to easily make mobile purchases, such as asking Siri to make a payment using the PayPal app,” PayPal’s COO Bill Ready said in a statement.

PayPal also brings its OneTouch feature that allows for payment authentication for purchases through PayPal with fingerprint scanning, not requiring users to enter their Apple ID password every time. Apart from mobile devices, this OneTouch fingerprint feature works on Apple TV and Apple Watch as well. While this could lead to a lot of impulse buying by users, the option is being made available for those who want iPhone parts .

Windows Phone Is Officially Dead

2017-07-12 10:43:14 | Samsung Galaxy S8

Microsoft may have plans to revive its iphone screen replacement business in the future, but for now, it has had enough of it. Today, the company is officially ending support for Windows Phone 8.1, the most popular version of its mobile operating system.

Windows Phone Is Officially Dead

The end of support for Windows Phone 8.1, which according to estimates run on more than 80 percent of Windows Phone handsets, means that the company won't be pushing any sort of updates - security patches, bug fixes, or otherwise. Going forward, people who stick around with a handset running 8.1 or older version will be left on their own.

Support for older versions like Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone 7.x ended in January, 2016 and October, 2014 respectively.

The demise of Windows Phone follows several popular apps including WhatsApp ditching several versions of Microsoft's mobile operating system over the past two years. Note-taking app Evernoteremoved its app from the Windows Phone Store earlier this month.

Of course several popular mobile apps either never arrived on Windows Phone, or the companies never ever put as much effort in maintaining their apps for the platform in the first place. Microsoft itself pulled LinkedIn app from the Windows Store last month, after not updating it for months.

Even as thousands of users - if not more - will continue to use Windows 10 Mobile, it has become evidently clear that Microsoft has formally given up Windows Phone, formerly known as Windows Mobile, a nearly decade-old effort to fight Android and iOS and make a dent in the mobile market. With Microsoft quitting on Windows Phone, BlackBerry giving up BBOS, Mozilla killing Firefox OS, nobody is really putting up a fight to break Android and iOS' duopoly, which is not great news for consumers.

Last year, CEO Satya Nadella admitted that the company had "clearly missed the mobile iphone screen ," adding that he was now more focused on growing new categories. Under the leadership of Nadella,Microsoft has undergone major changes, one of which is making its apps and services available on rival platforms. Microsoft is now going where users are, a departure from the "Windows everywhere" policy of Steve Ballmer's Microsoft.

Will you buy the iPhone 8 if it doesn't have Touch ID?

2017-07-11 11:01:35 | Samsung Galaxy S8

This is a big year for Apple, and if you follow the rumor mill, then you know it refuses to give up on this fact. It's the 10 year anniversary of the iPhone, and while some folks might not have been all that impressed with the fact the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus kept the iPhone 6's design, this year is apparently going to be quite different. Leaks and rumors all point to a major redesign, with drastically minimal bezels and the adoption of an OLED display.

And as usual, considering how early the rumors started this year for Apple's upcoming flagship, there's a lot of back-and-forth on what's going to be included. A lot of analysts seem to agree on a few things, like that aforementioned OLED panel, or even the inclusion of wireless charging in some capacity, and the lack of bezels.

iPhone Touch ID

But there is one part, maybe the biggest part, that they can't seem to agree on: Touch ID.

This is one thing that folks can't agree on. It's safe to assume that Apple probably (hopefully?) has this figured out by now, but the rumor mill just can't catch a break. Some analysts have had an evolving view on the subject, suggesting the feature will be integrated into the display, and then maybe Apple won't feature it at all. Meanwhile, others think Apple is working diligently on implementing the feature, dedicated so much that they might move it onto the back of the upcoming iPhone.

I do believe that Apple worked as hard as it could on making Touch ID work in the display of the upcoming flagship iPhone lg parts . I think they know people --iPhone users-- like the fingerprint sensor being on the front of their phone, and doing anything else might not work out so well for thecasual fan. (I don't think it will matter what happens for the Apple diehards, for obvious reasons.)

Whether or not they figured it out, though, I'm honestly just not sure on. We've actually seen other companies unveil fingerprint readers embedded in a display, but almost immediately after that was announced analysts chimed in saying it wasn't "good enough" for an Apple product, which forced them to cast even more doubt that Apple had figured it out for their own iPhone.

All that being said, I think it's imperative that Apple has Touch ID in place. The alternative, rumors suggesting it could be facial recognition that takes the place of Touch ID, doesn't seem appealing to me at all. I think facial recognition is fine as a secondary means to unlock the handset, but for mobile payments and such? No way. A fingerprint reader is just an essential piece of the smartphone puzzle these days.

And what's funny about that, is the fact that while Apple wasn't the first, it was the iPhone that catapulted fingerprint readers to where they are now. The fact that there are so many rumors and analyst notes painting a future where Touch ID doesn't make the cut for the new flagship is disappointing.

I'll be straightforward here: If the iPhone 8 doesn't have Touch ID, it's not an option for me. I'm already not a huge fan of some of the changes that Apple has implemented in iOS 11, so removing a feature that's as important as Touch ID would be the straw that breaks the proverbial camel's back.

Do I think this will happen? I honestly have no idea. I don't think Apple will put Touch ID on the back of the lg screen replacement , though, which severely limits the options if the company can't get the fingerprint reader integrated into the display. Apple may delay the launch of the flagship just to work out the kinks, and if that's what has to happen, then so be it.
