I took my kids to a small zoo, Yumemigasaki Zoo in Kawasaki, on Sunday. The zoo was free admission, situated on the top of a hill called Kase Yama in Saiwai Ward of Kawasaki. It took us about 30 minutes from home to the area by bike.
I heard that there were several ways to the top of the small mountain, but it was a bit complicated to find them out when we were at the bottom of the hill. Finally, I discovered a steep gradient, which must be one of the paths to the zoo. I could barely pedal the bike on the steep slope with two kids on board.
However, the zoo was not that small and cheap as I’d imagined. Especially, I was astonished when we encountered zebras and penguins unexpectedly. There was a big playground with some playground equipment for children too.
Surprisingly, famous Shinto shrines, like Kumano Shrine and Sengen Shrine, a Buddhist temple, and even a burial mound from the ancient period were adjacent to the zoo. So even adults could enjoy being in this place, I thought. I would definitely come back sometime. Highly recommended!
妻が仕事に出掛ける日曜日は子供二人を連れて界隈を探索するのが恒例になりました。先週はディズニーランドの雰囲気味わいに舞浜に行き、モノレール（ディズニーリゾートライン）に乗った（＋公式土産屋で異常に高いぬいぐるみを買わされた）後、東京駅で新幹線見物。今週は私の中で長年謎の存在であった、川崎市幸区にある動物園「夢見ヶ崎動物公園」に行ってきました。
この動物園、無料の小さな市営動物園なんですが、横浜の、同じく無料の野毛山動物園の影に隠れ、とても地味な存在だと聞いていました。おまけに最寄り駅（新川崎駅）からも遠い変な立地なので車のない私のような者には尚更無縁の場所でした。調べたら自転車で自宅から３０分の距離。思い切って電動自転車に子供二人を載せて行ってみることにしました。
標高３５ｍの加瀬山のてっぺんにこの動物園はあります。入口が分かりにくく、グーグルマップを何度も確かめました。やっと見つけた急な坂を電動自転車でなんとか上ると標高３５ｍの小山ながらとても見晴らしがよく、晴れた日は展望台から富士山がきれいに見えるそうです。
動物園は想像していたより立派でした。シマウマやペンギンがいたのには正直驚きましたね。しかも動物との距離がやたら近いので結構迫力があり楽しめます。何故か神社やお寺もたくさん隣接してました（なんと古墳まで❗️）。歴史的にも名の知れた山なのでしょう。
珍しい名称「夢見ヶ崎」は室町の戦国武将、太田道灌がこの山に陣を敷いた時に見た「夢」に由来するのだとか。ところで、「夢見ヶ崎」の「ヶ」という字。日本語のカタカナのケの小文字的な存在なのではなく、もともとあてがわれていた「箇」という漢字が略されて、竹かんむりの「ヶ」のようなものが1つだけ取られたという説と、「箇」の異体字である「个」を崩して「ヶ」になったという二つの説が有力なんだとか。動物園とは関係ありませんが、こちらも長年の疑問（そんな大袈裟なものではないですが）だったものが解明されて良かったです。
