I recommend sending more diversity to the bottom the ocean, too. Great idea! 588 @Sheepdog1314 @Sheepdog1314 1 時間前(編集済み) this "we don't hire older white people" has hit me as well - I was an older cop, with fire service and EMS background, and was replaced with a 20-year old because of "optics".... 3 more recruits later they still haven't found a real "replacement" for me, someone who can converse and show empathy, has guts and doesn't run, has life experience and knows what to do when the sh*t hits the fan...but, they have their "optics" 129 @chazzmccloud36 @chazzmccloud36 3 時間前 Well I'm feeling inspired by this story. I still invent and build things just for fun, never to be marketed, never to be sold, some things given away to needy souls (like my CPAP machine and Oxygen Concentrator power failure backup units). Had I been involved in designing and building that submarine, it would have lived out its useful life and would be retired in a museum somewhere. There is a lot to be said for years of experience. 178 @OneMeanArtist @OneMeanArtist 52 分前 They paid for the Titanic experience and they got the Titanic experience. This company needs to be investigated & sued. 161 @kaz131993 @kaz131993 2 時間前 As an engineer, this is why so many engineers clash with managers. Not all engineering companies are this irresponsible and negligible, but the thing with the engineering industry is that the lesson of not hiring the most qualified person for the job can show up as a visible catastrophic disaster. I think this is definitely one of those examples. It's why most of us go into our job with the mind frame of "would I or would I let anyone of my family members go on the vehicle, bridge etc. that I designed". If your answer at any point is "no", then you have failed! This company is a textbook example of this. 6 @coreyciepiela7087 @coreyciepiela7087 4 時間前 Nothing screams "diversity is our strength" like a cold slow death drowning a mile beneath the waves 1199 @timehaley @timehaley 3 時間前(編集済み) RIP The CEO that fired the whistleblower that worked for him that was an experienced submariner and told him his sub is a death trap. This is a big deal as things like the air traffic control system relies on the phone network so losing service can be deadly. The issue was traced down to the faulty work of a diversity hire. This was addressed by requiring the going forward, merit hires would have to sign off on any work so diversity hire incompetence would hopefully be found and repaired. 5 @VolksdeutscheSS @VolksdeutscheSS 1 時間前 This is so sad. But having older, very experienced people who've gone through the curve and know some of what does and doesn't work is very necessary as well as they act as mentors to the younger people with fresh new ideas. It shouldn't matter who those mentors are or their ethnicity or anything else, outside of having very serious crimes in their record.
But this is what happens when you artificially enforce diversity instead of bringing in only the best people you can for the job. And it only becomes very apparent in extreme environments like aerospace where a mistake can destroy millions or billions of dollars in an instant and or get people killed. And now in this day and age, we're seeing extreme sports and adventuring: people going to Antarctica to visit on cruises, climbing the highest mountains, like Everest, or flying into space on rockets provided by New Space companies like SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Virgin Galactic.
And it's not as if OceanGate was doing this for the first time with the Titan submarine, it did have three successful dives to their credit, so it's not as if it's necessarily a totally bad, unworkable design or concept, but it's clear that the sub needed a great deal more testing and certification, perhaps on automated dives in shallow waters and then deep water in a series of very detailed tests which would be backed up by extensive land-based tests using development and qualification articles. These are the kinds of things that someone more experienced might've insisted on and apparently some people did, including outside certification, but were declined for costs.
The real problem I have with this is that some statist idiot is going to demand hyper regulations that could have a very negative impact on all such extreme adventure enterprises, even in situations where the participants have signed waivers understanding that what they're doing is very dangerous and high-risk. 7 @dakistle @dakistle 3 時間前 50 year old veteran submariners with impressive resumes are the only people I would want working on my hypothetical submarine. stepson of 5:18 one of the people on board the vessel 5:20 with Brian says posting on Facebook of 5:22 how the unfolding catastrophe didn't 5:24 stop him attending a Blink-182 concert 5:27 then stepfather in a mere 30 minutes 6:16 after asking people to pray for his 6:18 family says asked and only fans Eagle to 6:21 sit on his face too soon Brian too soon 6:24 experts and Friends of the crew have 6:26 outlined a number of different scenarios 6:27 as to what actually happened to the 6:29 submarine they say the most likely is 6:31 that the whole of the submersible 6:32 imploded due to the brittle carbon fiber 6:34 material killing all five passengers 6:36 within milliseconds even if they were 6:38 able to release their ballast tanks and 6:40 flow up to the surface of the water they 6:42 would almost certainly have been spotted 6:44 by now and they can't open up the hatch 6:45 from the inside so they would have run 6:47 out of oxy religion anyway if they're 6:49 stuck oh no near the bottom of the sea 6:50 bed near the wreckage of the Titanic 6:52 there's basically no hope because it 6:54 would take hours to pull them out and 6:55 their oxygen supply would have already 6:57 run out in that time they went in a 6:59 submarine called the Titan 7:01 the Titan is the name of the fictional 7:05 ship that sort of predicted the Titanic 7:07 disaster before the Titanic was built 7:10 there was a fictional book about a ship 7:13 called the Titan that sunk and went went 7:16 missing or whatever so they named it 7:18 they I don't think they did this 7:19 intentionally but they named it Titan 7:21 the submarine and so now it's down there 7:24 with the wreckage of the Titanic 7:26 and it's just sitting there a scintilla 7:29 of Hope is that they have more oxygen 7:30 than previously thought and have found 7:32 novel ways to conserve it but the 7:34 overriding view is that the CEO cut 7:36 corners on safety and didn't take 7:38 whistleblowers seriously something that 7:40 was even highlighted by a news reporter 7:42 who visited the sub in experimental 7:44 submersible vessel that has not been 7:46 approved or certified by any regulatory 7:48 body and could result in physical injury 7:50 disability emotional trauma or death 7:53 where do I find I couldn't help noticing 7:56 how many pieces of this sub seemed 7:59 improvised we can use these 8:01 off-the-shelf components I got these 8:03 from uh Camper World We Run the whole 8:05 thing with this game controller 8:10 you see this video the whole Saga will 8:11 probably have been brought to a 8:13 conclusion it's obviously not looking 8:14 great But Rising above all the political 8:17 [ __ ] we can only pray for those 8:18 unfortunate to be on the vessel and hope 8:20 for a miracle 8:23 [Music]
