杵築城（九州/大分県）/ Kituski Castle (Kyusyu/Oita Pref.)
杵築城は、日本一小さなお城と呼ばれていて、灯台のように、岬の上に建っています。
今から600年以上前の、1394年に築城ということですが、建物は1970年に再建されたそうです。城に上って、風景を眺めると、ここが昔から大事な場所だったことが想像できます。
Kitsuki Castle is said to be the smallest castle in Japan, which stands on the cape like a lighthouse.
Originally it was built in 1394, more than 600 years ago. The present castle tower was rebuilt in 1970.
If you goes up to the top of the castle tower, you can get a wonderful view and imagine why this place was important in those days.
城の東側の風景。八坂川の河口と守江湾一帯。干潮時には東西1.5km、南北2kmにわたる干潟となっていて、河口から干潟にかけてカブトガニ、アオギスといった希少種が生息しているとのこと。シギやチドリなどの渡り鳥もたくさん見られました。
奥に見えるのは、別府湾の南東端の佐賀関半島の関崎と四国の佐田岬？？
方角的には合っていると思うのですが、ご存知の方はご一報、お待ちしています
The east side of the castle, the mouth of the Yasaka River and Morie Cove. （gulf>bay>cove＝ｺｳぶ＝湾）
It is a tideland of 1.5 kilometers east and west, 2 kilometers north and south, where many rare species like the horseshoe crab inhabit. I also saw many migrant birds.
What you can see in the back are Sekizaki Cape of the Saganoseki Peninsula and Sada Cape of Shikoku...maybe?
城の西側を眺めると、川の左岸の絶壁の上に立派なお屋敷が！？これはいったい？？

The west side of the castle. You can see huge old Japanese-style houses on the steep cliff on the left side of the river.

とりあえず、白いビルのある町中に向かいます。
I decided to go downtown where big white buildings are to find out.
こちらは、商人の町です。
この写真の大通りは東西に延びていて、画面手前が東側です。
江戸時代から続くお茶の店や味噌屋などが残っています。
Here is the commercial district.
Running from east to west, this main street is lined with many long-standing shops such as tea shops and miso shops.
The front side of this picture is east.

とりあえず、画面の右、つまり北の坂を上ることにしました。
I decided to go up the northern slope on the right side of this picture.
北台武家屋敷跡 Kita-dai (North hill) Samurai Residences
杵築城下町の見どころで、長い土塀や白壁の続く街並みが、江戸時代の面影を色濃くとどめています。
重臣たちの屋敷や藩校跡（門は当時のままで、中に模型あり）も見ることができます。
This area retains the look of the Edo period.
You can see the rows of samurai homes surrounded by traditional mud walls, the clan school where the samurai and their children used to study and practice martial arts, etc.

でも、もっとも印象的なのは、2つの坂を同時にみることのできるこちらの風景でしょう。

The most impressive spot of the town is here where you can see two slopes at the same time.

北台の酢屋の坂から南台の塩屋の坂へ

杵築市は、「サンドイッチ型城下町」と謳って売り出しているようですが、想像以上のすばらしさです。
Kituski City tries to make itself popular calling it "Sandwich-shaped castle town" .
In fact, the real scene with two slopes was more wonderful than I had expected.
南台武家屋敷側から（地図の③）
下の大通りの交差点で、小学校の先生が生徒達の見守りをしていました。生徒達が元気に挨拶して帰っていくのが、微笑ましいです。

At the crossing of the main street below, an elementary school teacher stood to see off his students going back home.
Students cheerfully said good-by to him. So adorable!

南台の杵築城下町資料館の奥にある展望台からの眺めです。（地図の④）
驚くことに、ここから岬に建つ杵築城が一望できます。

Surprisingly you can see the castle tower on the tip of the cape from here!
杵築の町はコンパクトですが、地形の面白さは最高です。
NHKのブラタモリで、タモリさんに是非行って頂きたいと思いました。
Kitsuki has such a unique landform, even though it is rather small, that I want Mr. Tamori, who seems interested in topography, to visit the town in his popular TV program called "Bura Tamori" of NHK!
