2022年8月、初めて鹿児島を訪れて、私がとても驚いたことがあります。それは、西郷さん（西郷隆盛）は鹿児島の人にとても人気があると知っていたのですが、西郷さんに負けず劣らずの人気を誇っている人物が、島津斉彬ということでした。
斉彬と西郷さんのゆかりの地をご紹介したいと思います。

When I visited Kagoshima for the first time in August 2022, I was very surprised. I knew that Mr. Saigo (Takamori Saigo) was very popular with the people of Kagoshima, but the person who was as popular as Mr. Saigo was Nariaki Shimazu.
I would like to introduce you to places related to Nariakira & Saigo-san.

↓仙厳園と尚古集成館
Sengan-en and Shoko Shuseikan

仙巌園は万治元年（1658年）、島津家19代光久によって築かれた別邸です。
庭は、錦江湾を池に、桜島を築山に見立てた雄大な景観で、島津家が琉球を通じて中国貿易を行っていたため、中国文化の影響が見られます。
2015年に世界文化遺産に登録されました。

Senganen is a villa built in 1658 by Mitsuhisa, the 19th head of the Shimazu family.
The garden is a magnificent landscape with Kinko Bay as a pond and Sakurajima as an artificial mountain, and the influence of Chinese culture can be seen because the Shimazu family traded with China through Ryukyu.
It was registered as a World Heritage Site in 2015.

↓鶴灯篭/ A crane lantern

1857年、斉彬はこの鶴灯篭を使ってガス灯の実験を行ったとのこと。

↓2018年の大河ドラマ「西郷どん」はここでも撮影されました。
The 2018 period-NHK-historical-drama "Sego-don" was also filmed here.

↓ばくちの木
/ Bakuchi no ki (which means a tree of a gamble)
身包み剥がされた博打打のように、木の皮がなく、赤い幹だけになっています。
Like a stripped gambler, it has no bark but a red trunk.

↓御殿　/The House

御殿は、29代忠義(久光の長男、斉彬の養子、1840-1897)の代には一時本邸として、また国内外の要人を招く「迎賓館」としての役割も果たしました。
 During the reign of Tadayoshi, the 29th, the palace served as the main residence for a time and also as a "guest house" to invite dignitaries from home and abroad.

↓薩摩焼の花瓶/ Satsuma-ware Vases

1896年、島津忠義が、ロシア皇帝戴冠式でロシア皇帝ニコライ二世に贈った花瓶のレプリカ。
Replica of the huge pair of vases sent by Shimazu Tadayoshi in 1896 as a gift to Nicholas II of Russia on his coronation as Emperor of Russia.

この部屋のシャンデリアは19世紀にロンドンで注文生産されたものです。
The chandelier in this room was order-made in London during the 19th century.

 

 

↓御居間/ Tadayoshi’s study.
忠義が一日の大半を過ごした部屋で、書類の決裁を行ったり昼食をとっていました。庭園全体を最も美しく見られる部屋です。
It was the room where Tadayoshi spent most of the day, approving documents and having lunch. The room offers the most beautiful view of the entire garden.

↓照国神社の鳥居Torii of Terukuni Shrine

照国神社は、島津家第28代当主、島津斉彬を祀る神社です。
1877年（明治10年）の西南戦争、1945年（昭和20年）の戦災で2度焼失しましたが、1958年（昭和33年）に再建されたそうです。

Terukuni Shrine is dedicated to Shimazu Nariakira, the 28th head of the Shimazu family.
It was destroyed by fire twice during the Seinan War in 1877 and World War II in 1945, but it was rebuilt in 1958.

1873年（明治6年）の火災で焼失しましたが、2020年（令和2年）に復元されました。

It was destroyed by fire in 1873 but was restored in 2020.

↓西南戦争の痕跡
/Traces of the Seinan War

1877年（明治10年）の西南戦争で、熊本・宮崎での戦いに敗れた西郷軍は、城山を中心に布陣し、約5万人の政府軍に包囲されたとのこと。
周囲の発掘調査で見つかった銃弾や砲弾から、西南戦争の痕跡であるとわかったそうです。

Having been defeated in battles in Kumamoto and Miyazaki , Saigo's army came back to Kagoshima and got ready for the last battle around Shiroyama. 
They were surrounded by about 50,000 government troops.
From the bullets and artillery shells found in the surrounding excavations, many holes turned out to be traces of the Seinan War in 1877

↓今お堀は、天国の象徴のような蓮の花で覆われています。
Now the moat is covered with lotus flowers like a symbol of heaven.

To the right of the red and white tower stands the Shiroyama Observatory.
