Dali When I was young, I had a girlfriend in Japan. That girl’s name was Kayo. Her family was Korean, but curiously she had a Japanese name. When I first came to Japan, it was the Bubble Era. Her family was very rich and she had her own personal car. I visited her house in Shiga, which was a Japanese style house. Actually, though, she was not my type. At the same time, I had another girlfriend I liked more than Kayo, so I told her, “I think we should break up. Let’s break up.” Unfortunately, the relationship with the other girlfriend also broke up soon.
ダリちゃん わしが若い頃、日本に彼女がいてね、佳与って名前なんだ。彼女の家族は韓国人なんだけど、彼女の名前は日本人なんだよね、不思議だけど。わしが初めて日本に来たときはバブル時代でね。彼女の実家はお金持ちで、彼女は自分の車を持っていた。彼女の家にもお邪魔したことがあったよ。滋賀県にあってね。日本式のとても大きなお屋敷でね。でもね、実はわしのタイプではなかったんだ。その頃、わしにはもう一人佳与より好きな彼女がいてね、だから佳与にこう言ったんだ。「わしらの仲は終わりにしたほうがいい、別れよう……」と。残念ながら、そのもう一人の彼女との関係もそのうち消えてしまった。

Dali But I discovered something interesting when I recently visited the place by Lake Biwa where Kayo’s house used to be. This was more than 15 years after I last saw Kayo.
ダリちゃん それで、ここからが面白い話なんだけど、わしはこの前、佳与が住んでいた家を訪ねてみたんだ。滋賀の琵琶湖のほとりにあったんだけど。彼女に会ってからもう15年以上経っているなあ。
Me You have such amounts of free time? You must be bored silly. And, did you discover anything?
私 よくそんな時間あったね。ほんと暇だね～。で、何か収穫あった？
Dali I found nothing. It was an utterly empty lot! What happened to her and her family? Such a big, beautiful expensive Japanese house! My supposition is that because of the burst of the bubble, her father’s real estate business went bankrupt.
ダリちゃん それがね、そこには何もなかったんだ。ガラ～ンとして。いったいどうしちゃったんだろう。あんなに大きなすごいお屋敷だったのに……。わしが思うに、バブルがはじけて彼女のお父さんの不動産事業が立ち行かなくなってしまったのかなあ……。
