Dali Yes. At the school, managers were almost always women. I don’t know why. But that was their policy.
ダリちゃん そう。その学校では、マネージャーはほぼ全員が女性だった。なぜだか知らないけど会社の方針だったんじゃないの？

Dali Anyway, we had the company sobetukai (farewell party) for this manager. Many people came and I was sitting at the table with the new manager.
ダリちゃん それはそうと、そのマネージャーのために会社主催で送別会をすることになったんだ。大勢出席したけど、わしは新マネージャーと同じテーブルだった。

Dali Yes. This was nabe cuisine. In Japan, especially with nabe, women at the table will often take control and put things into the nabe. Of course, there is usually no problem with this.
ダリちゃん うん。鍋料理だったんだ。日本では、特に鍋では、テーブルの女性がしばしば鍋奉行するだろう？ もちろんこれに関しては通常、問題ないんだけど。

Dali Yes…The nabe was shabu-shabu. I know, with shabu-shabu, we each, individually, take some meat, swish it around in the broth for just 5-10 seconds, while holding it with chopsticks. We must not release it. Then we put it into tare and eat it.
ダリちゃん そうなんだ……しゃぶしゃぶ鍋だったんだ。確か、しゃぶしゃぶって各々がお肉をお箸で掴んで鍋のスープに5－10秒、「しゃぶしゃぶ」ってするんだろう？ 離したらダメ。で、それをたれにつけて食べるんだろう？
Me You are right. Sasuga Dari-chan. How do you say “sasuga” in English?
私 その通り。さすがダリちゃん。「さすが」って英語でなんて言ったっけ？
Dali Please be quiet. The new manger was very kind to take the control of the nabe. But this woman was so foolish as to put all of the meat, in its entirety, into the nabe. Shabu-shabu meat is cut paper-thin, so if you put a large amount of it into the broth at one time, it gets hard and curls up. Sounds delicious, doesn’t it?
ダリちゃん ちょっと黙っててくれないか。新マネージャーはご親切に鍋奉行をしてくれたんだ。でもね、彼女は、お肉をそっくりそのまま全部、鍋に入れちゃうんだよね。何考えてるんだか。しゃぶしゃぶのお肉はとっても薄くカットされているので、一度に沢山を鍋のスープに入れちゃうと、固くなって塊になっちゃうよ。めっちゃおいしくなさそう！
Me Definitely not!
私 そうだね！
Dali But I could say nothing because she was my new manager. I wanted to ask her, “Are you Japanese? Do you not know how to eat shabu-shabu?” It was not as if she were a child. She was maybe 28 or 30. Unbelievable! It was a waste of delicious shabu-shabu meat!
ダリちゃん でも、新マネージャーだから何も言えなかったんだ。「ほんと日本人？ しゃぶしゃぶの食べ方、知ってる？」って聞いてやりたかったけど。子供でもあるまいし。28や30歳の女性だよ。信じられない！ しゃぶしゃぶのお肉がもったいない！
