Dali I was once working at a small English language school at which we had a service in which students could freely join a group conversation. In this case, “free” means that students can come in anytime with no appointments, go out of the room, or stay all day, as they want. Of course, they had to pay one point or so for entrance. In addition to the free English conversation, we also provided free coffee. Students could drink as much coffee as they wanted. Teachers also took advantage of the free coffee.
ダリちゃん わしはかつて小規模の英会話スクールで働いていたんだけど、生徒さんがフリーでグループ会話に参加できるサービスがあったんだ。この場合「フリー」とは生徒さんが予約なしていつでも好きなだけ参加したり、退出したり、一日中でも居られるという意味だ。もちろん、入るのに、1ポイントかそこらを払う必要があったけどね。フリーの英会話に加えて、コーヒーもタダで提供していた。生徒さんは好きなだけコーヒーが飲めた。教師もタダでコーヒーが飲めた。

Dali Next to the coffee server, there were stocks of small cups of white coffee creamer. As you know, you break the tab of the coffee creamer, pull it back, and pour it into the coffee.
ダリちゃん コーヒーサーバーの隣には、コーヒーミルク（コーヒーフレッシュ）が山積みにされて置かれていた。当たり前だけど、コーヒーミルク（コーヒーフレッシュ）のタブを折って、後ろに引き下げて、コーヒーに注ぐ。

私 クリーミーだね。
Dali Now, I always dipped the plastic cup into the coffee to get a bit of coffee and swirl it around to get every bit of the white cream inside the plastic cup. However, Japanese people would never do this. I wonder why.
ダリちゃん それでね、わしはいつもコーヒーミルク（コーヒーフレッシュ）のプラスチックのカップをコーヒーに漬けてコーヒーを少しすくって、プラスチックカップの内側のクリームを一滴残さず溶かすためカップをグルっと回すんだよ。でもね、日本人は絶対しない。なぜなんだろう。
Me I don’t know. But I never do such a thing. You must be a weirdo guy.
私 さあわからない。でも僕はそんなことしないね。おかしいよそれ。
Dali I discovered a very interesting thing from several students as to the reason the Japanese do not do this. They said, without exception, that to try to get the last drop of this white creamer in this manner makes you look poor.
ダリちゃん 日本人がなぜそうしないかの理由を何人もの生徒さんたちに聞いた結果、とても面白いことがわかったんだ。生徒さんたちは例外なく、そんなにまでして最後の一滴までコーヒーミルクを回収するのは貧乏くさく見えると。
Me Yes! Yes! I think so too!
私 そうそう。僕もそう思う。
Dali I was very surprised. That reason is ridiculous.
ダリちゃん わしはとても驚いた。ばからしい理由だね。
Me Why do you think so?
私 なぜそう思うの？
Dali Imagine the situation in an izakaya, where everyone is sharing a plate, from which each person can take as much as he wants. Eventually, there is a final piece remaining on the plate. I might ask someone, “How about taking this last piece?” The girl says, “No, no, I don’t want to eat the last piece because if I eat it, it makes me look poor.” This is no different than taking the last bit of cream. Don’t you think it ridiculous?
ダリちゃん 居酒屋での出来事、みんなで一つのお皿をシェアーして、各々が好きなだけとれる状況を想像しよう。最終的に、お皿には一切れだけ残っている。「最後の一切れどう？」とわしは尋ねる。女の子は「いいえ、最後の一つはちょっと……だってもらうのは貧乏くさく見えるから」と言う。最後の一滴のクリームと変わらないじゃん。おかしいと思わない？
Me It’s called enryo-no-katamari.
私 それは「遠慮のかたまり」と言うんだよ。
Dali What I did learn from this experience is that the Japanese have a strange psychological problem with the idea of poverty: they think poverty is such a bad thing. Of course, it is not a happy thing. But, if I say I’m poor, I am not denigrating myself.
ダリちゃん わしがこの経験から学んだことは、日本人は貧乏ということに変な心理的問題を抱えていると思う。「貧乏はとても悪」というね。もちろん、ハッピーなことじゃない。でもね、わしが貧乏だと言っても、自分を貶（おとし）めているわけではない。

私 それって、どういうこと？
Dali If I say I’m ugly, I am putting myself down. If I say I’m stupid, I am putting myself down. But if I say I’m poor, I am not putting myself down. In fact, a lot of poor Americans are proud to be poor. I want to tell the Japanese that being poor is nothing to be ashamed of. If you’re poor, be proud. Tell everybody, “I’m poor!”
ダリちゃん もしわしがわしのことブサイクだと言ったら、自分を貶めていることになる。もし自分のことを間抜けと言ったら、自分を貶めていることになる。でもね、もし自分は貧乏だと言っても、自分を貶めていることにはならない。実際、アメリカ人の多くは貧乏であることを誇りに思っている。わしは日本人に、貧乏であることに恥ずかしがる必要はないと言いたい。もし貧乏であっても、誇りを持つといい。みんなに言えばいい「自分は貧乏だ」と。
