Me I was watching an American movie last night. The main character expressed the need to go to the bathroom. I was surprised because, instead of going to take a bath, he went to urinate!!

Americans may say, “I have to go to the bathroom.” It is always “have to.” We don’t say, “I will go to the bathroom.” Anyway, if I say, “I have to go to the bathroom,” and if you are not American and don’t understand American English, you might ask, “Didn’t you take a bath before you came?”

He has a thick tube in his anus.” I don’t know if this is really the way astronauts urinate or defecate in space, but it’s probably true. Anyway, my point is that we commonly use this expression without any idea of going to any room.

For example, my wife might say, “Tarou (my dog) went to the bathroom in the genkan.” But there is no bathroom in the genkan. The bathroom is in the back of the house, and the genkan is in the front of the house. How can he go to the bathroom in the genkan? But that is how Americans use this silly expression. It’s so common that Americans don’t even think how strange it is.

I was surprised that the expression, “go to the bathroom” is an American English. Other English-speaking people may interpret it literally.
