Dali It’s hard to say because Japanese shaken includes inspection, tax, and insurance. But in the US, these are treated separately. In the US, we must have inspection every year. It’s compulsory but it’s cheap because it’s just the inspection portion of what Japanese think of as shaken.
ダリちゃん 一言で言いづらいね。日本の車検は、点検、税金や保険が含まれるから。でもアメリカではそれらは別々に扱われる。アメリカでは毎年「点検」がある。強制だけど安いんだ。だって日本人が考えている「車検」のうち「点検」だけだもの。

Dali I go to a gas station to have an inspection. The inspector goes to front, while holding a clipboard as I sit in the car. He says, “Sir, turn on your headlights.” So I turn on the headlights. He says, “Light OK. Check. Next, turn on the windshield wipers.” So I turn them on. He says, “Ah…, OK. Now, blow the horn.” So I blow the horn. He says, “OK…, good.” Then he goes to the back and asks me to press the brake, etc. The inspection takes just 20 minutes and it’s very cheap! When I was living in the US, the inspection cost was maybe about 700 yen. So cheap. It was really almost nothing.
ダリちゃん 車検を受けにガソリンスタンドに行く。検査官はクリップボードを持って車のフロントに行く。わしは運転席。彼は「お客様、ヘッドライトをつけてください」と言う。で、わしはヘッドライトをつける。彼は「ライト、オーケー。チェック。次はワイパーを作動させてください」と言う。で、わしは作動させる。彼は「えーと、オーケー。次はクラクションを鳴らしてください」と言う。で、わしはクラクションを鳴らす。彼は「オーケー……問題無し」と言う。それから彼は車の後ろに回ってブレーキを踏んでくださいと言う、などなど。車検はたった20分でおしまい。それにとても安い！ わしがアメリカに住んでいた頃、車検は多分700円くらいだったと思う。とっても安い。ほとんどただ同然だったね。

Dali Consider the situation where the brake light doesn’t light. The inspector says, “Oh, Mr. customer, your left brake light doesn’t light so it needs to be fixed.” I say, “OK, I understand.” He continues, “Your car won’t pass the inspection in its present state. Come back tomorrow if you’ve fixed it.” So I go home and replace the bulb.
ダリちゃん ブレーキライトがつかない状況を考えよう。検査官は「あのう、お客様、左のブレーキライトが点灯しないんで直す必要がありますね」と言う。わしは「オーケー。わかりました」と言う。彼は「このままではあなたの車は車検を通せませんね。直し終わられたら明日もう一度お越しください」と続ける。で、わしは家に戻り電球を交換する。
Me You replace the bulb yourself?
私 ダリちゃん、自分で電球を交換するの？
Dali Of course! What do you expect? Do you pay somebody to replace a light bulb in your house? I will never pay somebody to replace a bulb―in my house OR my car!
ダリちゃん もちろんだよ！ 何考えてるの？ 自分の家の電球を替えるのに人に頼んでお金を払う？ 電球を替えるのにお金なんか払わないよ！ 自分の家でも車でも。
Me I wonder how to remove the headlight cover…
私 ヘッドライトのカバーどうやって外すのかなあ……
Dali So, I go back to the gas station the next day. The inspector says, “Now the brake light properly works. OK, you’ve passed.” No extra cost is charged because it is a set price.
ダリちゃん で、わしは次の日ガソリンスタンドに戻る。検査官は「さて、ブレーキライトはちゃんと機能するし、オーケー。合格です」と言う。追加コストはいらないヨ。だって全部込みだもの。

I do envy the American car inspection system. Furthermore, I found on the Internet that, in some states, there is no inspection system at all.
