一乗谷は、朝倉孝景（たかかげ）が、応仁の乱(1467-1478)の頃、本拠地にしたのが、始まりと言われています。
斯波（しば）氏、甲斐氏を追放して越前国を平定、応仁の乱で荒廃した京から、多くの公家や高僧、文人、学者たちが避難してきて飛躍的に発展し、北の京とも呼ばれ、最盛期には、人口が1万人を超えていたとのこと。
朝倉義景（よしかげ）が1573年に信長に敗れるまで、5代約100年に渡って越前国の中心として繁栄した城下町でした。

特筆すべきは、朝倉氏が滅びた時、城下町も焼き尽くされましたが、町全体の遺跡が、ほぼ完ぺきな形で近年発掘されているということです
越前の中心は、柴田勝家で有名な北ノ庄（現在の福井駅の近く）に移り、1967年に発掘調査が開始されるまで、400年近く町全体が忘れ去られた状態になっていたため、荒らされることがなかったようです

*1971年、山城跡を含めた約278ヘクタール(278 hectares) が特別史跡 (Specila Historic Sites)に指定。
*1991年、5庭園 (5 gardens) が特別名勝 (Special Places of Scenic Beauty) に指定。
*2007年、約170万点の出土品のうち、2343点が重要文化財(Important Cultural Properties) に指定。

Ichijodani was a castle town ruled by Asakura Family for about 100 years until 1573, when Asakura Yoshikage was defeated by Oda Nobunaga and the whole city was burned out. The area used to be a major cultural and military center around Hokuriku Area and had a peak population of over 10,000 inhabitants in spite of a rural and mountainous area.

The most significant feature of the ruins is that the whole town had been buried entirely under the earth for about four hundred years. That is why so many relics were found without any disturbance after excavation of ruins began in 1967. 
2,343 relics are nationally designated as Important Cultural Properties.

一乗谷は、福井市街の東南方向約10㎞、九頭竜川支流の足羽（あすわ）川のさらに支流の一乗谷川の谷合にあり、戦国時代の城下町と館跡、背後の山城から構成されています。
東西約500m、南北約3㎞、東、西、南を山に囲まれ、北には足羽川が流れる天然の要害で、南北に城戸を設け、その間の長さ約1.7㎞の「城戸の内」に、朝倉館、侍屋敷、寺院、職人や商人の町やが計画的に整備されていたとのこと。

The Ichijodani Asakura Family Historic Ruins are located in 10km south east of the center of Fukui Prefecture.
Ichijodani is a valley of the Ichijodani River, a branch of the Asuwa River with an east-west width of approximately 500 meters and a north-south length of approximately 3 kilometers. The valley is surrounded by mountains on the east, west and south, and by the Asuwa River to the north, forming a natural fortification.  There used be a Asakura Family residence, Buddist temples and houses of craftsmen and shopkeepers along a 1.7km road sandwitched between 2 huge gates, built on the southern end and the northern end.

応仁の乱(1467-77)で、都を離れた朝倉氏が一乗谷に城下町を作れたのは、もともとここが勢力下にあったからですが、何より高い山々に囲まれ、羽川上流で船が上がれる限界地点であり、古くから港町として栄えた三国との舟運を可能にする場所だったからのようです。

During the Onin War (1467 -77), the Asakura clan, who left the capital, built the castle town in Ichijodani.
Why could they build such a magnificent town here surrounded by high mountains?
It think it's because of the Asuwa River.
Ichijo-dani was the upper limit where boats could go up the Asuwa River, leading to Mikuni Port, where trade was flourishing at that time.
This reminds me how important water transportation used to be.

*500年前に、それぞれの家に井戸が完備されていたようで、びっくりです。トイレの跡も発掘されていました。

*A well seems to have been duck for each house 500 years ago!!  You can see many wells excavated here and there as well as toilets.

↓唐門・朝倉氏が滅ぼされた後、朝倉氏の菩提を弔うために作られたと伝わる松雲院の寺門。江戸中期頃再建されたとのこと。
Kara Gate, which was built in the middle of Edo Period, after Asakura Family perished.

余談：一向一揆と朝倉氏との関連

興福寺別当の経覚は、朝倉孝景の押領に対抗するため、延暦寺に追われていた親戚の本願寺8世法主・蓮如を自領の吉崎に匿い、代官の役目を負わせつつ浄土真宗の布教を許したそうで、これが後に朝倉氏歴代を悩ませる一向一揆の温床となったとは、皮肉なものです。

↓下城戸跡

It was said to be built at the northern end the old narrow town and stop the invaders.

町の北の端にあったと考えられる下城戸は、幅18m、高さ5m、長さ20ｍの土塁が残り、枡形虎口である門跡には、重さ10トン超えの石が積み上げられている。城戸の外側には、幅10m、深さ3mの堀があり、かつては一乗谷川と直接つながっていたと考えられているとか…
ここから、海外の宝物などが館に運ばれてきたと思うと、感慨深いです。

 

一乗谷に2022年10月、新しい博物館がオープン！

They say a new museum will be open in October, 2022, as about 1.7million relics were excavated and the existing musium is too small😅
It is under the construction now.
