遅い秋
今年の夏は暑かった。しかし、さすがに九月も末を迎えて、山の畑に向かう時にも、喉の渇きやシャツを濡らすような汗もすっかりなくなった。今は山の畑の木陰に横たわって、切れた息と疲れを癒すこともない。
多少の時間の前後、先行と遅れなどがあるとしても、自然のサイクルは必然的である。今年もまた秋は訪れ、稲畑の稲穂は頭を垂れ、畦には曼珠沙華が咲き、山辺には清楚な萩の花が姿を見せ始める。
遅れた秋の姿の片鱗を、今年も記録しておこうと思う。
一時は野鹿にすっかり葉を食われてしまったけれど、再び芽吹き始めたビワ。
山の辺に十四五本もありぬべし彼岸花
せっかく実ったイチジクもサルにやられて、今年は十個ぐらいしか味わえなかった。それでも、三年目で少しずつ実も増えた。

二〇一〇年八月六日(金) 晴れ一時雨
琵琶湖の花火
結局、四時近くになってようやく山畑に向かう。家をでるときには、夏らしい青空に、太陽がまだ煌々と照りつけていた。暑い日には自転車でも決して急がない。息が切れないように、まだ青い稲穂を付け始めたばかりの稲田を遠くに眺めたり、その上を低く飛び交うツバメの跡を追ったり、遠くの野原と家々を見晴るかしたりしながら、ゆっくりとペダルを踏みこんで行く。
山畑に向かうときに、とくに坂を登り行くときに、その日の自分の体調がどんな具合かはっきりと感じる。やはり寝不足のときなどは、疲労度が確実に違う。この日は睡眠も足りていたのか、急な坂もそれほどに苦痛に感じない。
ほとんど畑の中に入りかけたのに、空模様が急変したかと思うと、霙のような雨が降り出した。二百メートルほども走ると小屋もありそこで雨宿りもできるのだが、急な雨の激しさと、その距離の間にずぶ濡れになるのを恐れて、先の雨宿りの経験からこんなときのために小さな青いビニールシートを用意していたのを、早速バックの中から取りだした。そして、立てかけた自転車にその片方を括りつけ、もう一方は傍らの一本の立木に括り付けて、ちょうど公園などで時折見かける路上生活者の生活空間のようなものをつくって入り、そこで雨を凌いだ。
子供の頃の冒険ごっこを思い出すような気持ちで、京都タワーなどを遠くに見下ろせる霧雨に煙る市街地を眺めていた。雨は三四十分も続いただろうか。山の天気は変わりやすいのだ。夏の日の夕立は昔なら当たり前だった。
空に再び青空が広がり、雨に濡れそぶる小笹の間を抜けて、イチジクと柿と桃の木を見に行く。柿はこの春から、折られた根幹の脇から天空に向けてまっすぐに一本の枝を伸ばしている。猿に再び折られることのないように、先日、支っかえ棒を三四本打ち込んだ。
イチジクはすでに小さいながらひとかどの大人のような樹形を見せている。そこそこに実もつけている。しかし、どれもまだ小粒で青い。
このブログではすっかり報告はしていないが、桃の木もかなりの大きさに成長している。枝も四方に伸び放題になっていたので、秋になって涼しくなれば剪定鋏を入れて、枝振りを整えるつもりでいた。それなのに、先日サルに先手(剪定)を撃たれて、大切な枝を折られてしまう。洒落にも面白くない。
それでも山をさらに上がると、飛び交うトンボの群の数とヒグラシの鳴き声の繁さが増してくる。東の青空を流れ行く雲の形に、すでに秋の片鱗を感じる。
鎌や噴霧器などの畑の道具を出し入れしているときに、バックのチャックが毀れてしまった。脇に抱えて修理に取りかかったが、適当なペンチなどの道具がなく、どうにも直らない。結局畑仕事もそっちのけで、時計を見ると夕刻七時にも近い。
真夏だから、まだ十分に明るいけれども、闇の帳は早いので、畑を降りることにした。その帰り道の畦道から、夕闇の中に輝き始めた市街地を遠くに眺望することができる。視点の中心に写るのはいつもライトアップされた京都タワーだ。その見慣れた黄昏景色の中に、タワーの右手後方に、色鮮やかな小さなダリアの花のような花火の上がっているのが見えた。どこかで花火大会が開かれているに違いない。
市内を眺望できる場所は、この山畑の畦道からのほかに、もう一カ所ある。それは高畠稜のある丘陵からである。この御陵には桓武天皇の皇后であられた藤原乙牟漏さまが葬られている。長岡京の造営に失敗して平安京に都を移したとき、この地に亡くなられた美しいお后が新しい平安京を一望できるようにと、桓武天皇はお后をこの高台に葬られたに違いない。この場所からも市街地を眺望できる。もし花火大会がまだ終わっていなければ、帰路そこからも花火が見られるはずだ。
まだ畑仲間が一人残っていた。池に流れ落ちる水で、いつものように顔の汗と手の泥を洗って、畑を後にする。
帰り道に高畠御陵の傍らを通り過ぎるとき、その急坂の途中に自転車を止めて、まだ花火大会が終わっていないかどうか、京都タワーの右側後方のあたりをしばらく見つめていた。すると果たして遠くの山際のあたりがほのかに明るくなったかと思うと、さまざまな彩りの花火が、東山の稜線の上に輝いて見えた。いずれも山影に半円だけ切り取られた花火である。ときおり空高く打ち上げられる大型花火だけが、ボタンや菊のような小さな丸い花の全容を見せた。
しばらく自転車に腰掛けたまま、小さな花火を遠くに眺めていると、団扇を片手にした小柄な婦人が、坂の下から上がってきた。彼女はやがて立ち止まるとくるりと背を向けて、私のように同じ花火を眺め始めた。それから約二十分近くも、遙か遠くの東山の稜線に切られて頭の半円だけ顔を出す花火と、ときおり高く打ち上げられて、山影のうえ高く闇夜に浮かぶ小さな花々を眺める。打ち上げの音がここまで小さく響いてくる。
たたずまいを崩さずに、団扇をあおりながらいつまでも花火を見ている婦人の後ろ姿を見て、彼女ならこの花火がどこの花火か知っているかもしれないと思った。しかし、行き交う人に気軽に挨拶することさえ憚られる哀れな人間関係の日本では、見ず知らずの婦人に声を掛けるのも気後れし、尋ねても気まずい思いがするだけかもしれない。それでも、自転車を乗り直して再び坂を降りがけに、
「奥さん、どこの花火かご存じですか」と訊いて見た。
「ええ、琵琶湖の花火大会です。おおきに。」と言って応えてくれる。
家に帰り着きテレビを見ると、ちょうど菅直人首相が広島原爆の第６５回記念式典で挨拶する姿が映っていた。
