Dali Of course, in the US, which is not a homogeneous country, different kinds of people have different kinds of lives. I will tell you only of my own experience. Although I grew up in the US and spent time there as a young child, I don’t remember clearly what Columbus Day was like. But I think it was a national holiday. I think school was closed, and most businesses were closed. Of course, business owners are free to do as they wish, since there is no law that says businesses must close. But probably most federal and state government offices closed.
ダリちゃん もちろん、単一民族国家ではないアメリカでは、色々な人々が色々な生活を送っている。わしの経験に限定して話すね。わしはアメリカで育って幼い子供時代をそこで過ごしたが、コロンブス・デーがどんなんだったかよく覚えていない。でもね、祝日だったと思う。学校は休みで、ほとんどの会社も閉まっていた。もちろん、その日、会社は休まなければならないという法律はないので、会社のオーナーは営業したければすればいいんだけど。でも、おそらくほとんどの連邦や州のオフィスは閉まっていたと思う。

Dali I only know that Columbus Day is a commemoration of Christopher Columbus’ discovery of America. I recall that there was no celebration, no special food or singing, or no parties. It was just a day off. That’s all I can remember. In fact, it is so unremarkable that I don’t even know the date of this holiday. I know the date of Christmas, Halloween, and Independence Day. But I don’t know when Columbus Day is. It’s almost a non-holiday. That’s all I can say.
ダリちゃん コロンブス・デーはクリストファー・コロンブスのアメリカ大陸発見を記念する日だという事だけは知っている。お祝いもなかったし、特別な食事も歌もなかったし、パーティーもなかったと思う。ただの休みの日。それだけしか記憶にない。実際、あまりにも、どうってことない日なのでその祝日がいつなのかも知らない。クリスマスやハロウィーンや独立記念日は知っているけど、コロンブス・デーがいつなのかは知らない。もうほとんど祝日とは言えないレベルだね。わしが言えるのはそんなところかな。

On the Internet, I found that Columbus Day
is on the second Monday of October, and it commemorates Christopher Columbus’
arrival to the Americas on October 12, 1492. It is a public holiday in many
parts of the US, where it is a day off and schools and most businesses are
closed. In some towns and cities, special church services, parades, and large
events may be held. But, for Dali, it is an unremarkable holiday. The situation
may be similar to some Japanese national holidays, such as Midori-no-hi,
Umi-no-hi, Yama-no-hi, and Keiro-no-hi, when I do nothing special.
ネットでは、コロンブス・デーは10月の第二月曜日で、1492年10月12日のクリストファー・コロンブスのアメリカ大陸到着をお祝いする日だそうだ。アメリカの多くの場所では祝日となっていてお休みで、学校や多くの企業が閉まっている。都市によっては、特別な礼拝やパレードや大規模なイベントが行われる。でもダリちゃんにとっては、どうってことない祝日なのだそうだ。日本でも、みどりの日、海の日、山の日、敬老の日なんかあるけど、僕にとっては別に何もしないという点で、それらみたいなものかな。
