私 ねえ、ダリちゃん。ダリちゃんはコロナウィルス怖くないの？
Dali No. I am no more afraid of the Wuhan flu than I am of a typical seasonal flu. One reason is that nobody I know has died or has gotten sick, including all of my friends and family. So I think the number of people who has gotten sick or died is extremely low. Even now, I often go out shopping or to eat in izakayas or restaurants. As you know, I don’t like wearing masks; thus, I never wear a mask. So, you can see I’m utterly unafraid.
ダリちゃん うん。わしは新型コロナウィルスは季節性のインフルエンザと大して変わらないと思う。だから怖くない。だって友人や家族を含め、わしの知り合いで亡くなったり体を壊した人っていないもん。だから、病気になったり、亡くなった人の数はとっても少ないと思う。こんな時でも、わしは買い物に行ったり居酒屋やレストランに食べに行くけどね。知っていると思うけど、わしはマスクが嫌い。だから絶対にしない。だからわしが全然怖がってないのわかるだろう？
Me Are you? I am on my good behavior, reading books at home. I miss the wine bar, which is one of my favorite and is still closed. However, Nothing has changed with Dali’s life….
私 へえー！ 僕は大人しく自宅で本を読んでいるけどね。行きつけのワインバーがまだ閉っていて行けなくて寂しいなあ。でもダリちゃんの生活は何も変わってないんだ……。
Dali Yes, that right. My life style hasn’t changed at all. Nevertheless, some things do seem to have changed. For example, life in cities and villages has changed dramatically in one sense. Before this “sickness,” we used to see thousands, upon thousands of Chinese people walking the streets of Japan. We couldn’t go anywhere without seeing Chinese people! We found them everywhere, not at just tourist attractions or main train stations, but even in tiny rural areas, scurrying around and noisily dragging their plastic suitcases behind them. But now they are gone!
ダリちゃん その通り。全く生活は変わっていない。でも、変化したものもあるみたいだね。例えば、ある意味、都会や田舎の暮らしは激変した。この「病」がはやるまでは、日本の街を大勢の中国人が闊歩していた。どこに行っても彼らを見かけたね。観光地や大きな駅、小さな田舎町でさえも、何処でも。スーツケースをガラガラ引きながら、小走りに歩いているのを見かけたね。でも今は違う。

Dali There is, indeed, one bad thing related to this situation. Governments have become extremely overpowering and have destroyed economies. This is even worse in Europe and the U.S. than it is in Japan.
ダリちゃん この状況に関して実に悪いことが一つある。政府がとっても強行的になって経済が破壊された。ヨーロッパやアメリカでは日本よりもっとひどいけどね。
Me It’s economically damaging. Anything else?

Dali Another thing related to this situation is that the Tokyo 2020 Olympics have been cancelled. Personally, I am against the Olympics being held in Japan. The Olympics would be a huge economic burden on a country already buried in debt, as well as being ecologically damaging as the venues will be abandoned or demolished after the Games. I definitely wasn’t looking forward to the Olympics coming to Japan this summer. Thanks to this situation, the Games have been postponed to next year. Hopefully, they will be cancelled entirely.
ダリちゃん この状況に関連したもう一つの事項として、2020年東京オリンピックの中止があるね。個人的には日本でのオリンピック開催には反対だ。借金まみれの日本には負担が大きすぎるよ。オリンピック後に会場が捨てられたり取り崩されたりするんでしょう？ エコにも反するね。わしは、今年の夏に日本でオリンピックが開かれるのを全く楽しみにしていなかった。この状況のおかげで、オリンピックは来年に持ち越されることになった。いっそのこと、なくなってしまってもいいけどね。

The name of corona virus is derived from its appearance, which, when viewed in electron microscope, reminds us of the “corona” of the sun or a crown cap. Dali seems to prefer “descriptive” name rather than the name based on the shape of the virus. In the same way, Donald Trump prefers to use the name, “Chinese virus” to depict this. Officially, the name of the virus is Covid-19, which is the abbreviation of coronavirus disease 2019. It is indeed a scientific name, but also a creepy name because it may predict the successive virus outbreaks of Covid-20 or Covid-21.
コロナウィルスの名前は電子顕微鏡で見た時、太陽の「コロナ」や「王冠」をイメージしたことに由来しているといわれている。ダリちゃんはこのような形状(shape of the virus)に由来する名前よりも、より叙述的な(descriptive)名前を好むようである。アメリカのトランプ大統領も「Chinese virus」という言葉を好んで使うようである。正式名はCovid-19でありcoronavirus disease 2019と言う意味。実に学術的な名前であるが、今後ウィルスの変異体が出た際のCovid-20やCovid-21などを予感させるなんとも不気味なネーミングである。
