Although I wasn’t very familiar with Memorial Day, according to the Internet, it’s an American celebration day and is the last Monday of May. Many Americans may visit cemeteries or memorials on this day, but I think that Dali has no interest in such things. Anyway, just for curiosity, I asked Dali what he thinks about Memorial Day. Let’s listen.
ぼくはあまり知らなかったけど、メモリアルデー（戦没将兵追悼記念日）はアメリカの祝日で五月の最終月曜日（2020年は5月25日）だそうだ。ネットによると多くのアメリカ人はこの日に墓地や記念碑を訪れるそうだが、おそらくダリちゃんはそんなことには全く興味がないと僕は思う。ともあれ、ダリちゃんがメモリアルデーをどう思っているかちょっと聞いてみることにした。
Me Hey, Dali. What do you do on Memorial Day?
私 ねえ、ダリちゃん。ダリちゃんはメモリアルデーに何かする？
Dali I don’t necessarily do anything special on Memorial Day, but something changes for me on that day. Memorial Day, I think, is the last Monday of May, but I am not sure.
ダリちゃん 別にこれと言ってメモリアルデーに特別なことをするわけでないけど。この日は、わしにとって何かが変わるんだ。メモリアルデーはおそらく五月の最終月曜日だと思うけど。
Me You don’t do anything in particular, as I expected.
私 やっぱり何もしないんだ。
Dali For American people, living in the US, and even for me, living in Japan now, Memorial Day, is the unofficial beginning of summer. This feeling is unique to us Americans. Of course, the start of summer is officially marked by the summer solstice (June 20, 2020). Although the summer solstice is the true beginning of summer, Memorial Day is the more popular beginning of summer. As you know, summer is my favorite season. So, for me, Memorial Day is a wonderful day!
ダリちゃん 米国に住んでいるアメリカ人にとって、そして今は日本に住んでいるわしにとってさえも、メモリアルデーは、非公式ながら夏の始まりを告げる日なんだ。この思いはわしらアメリカ人にしかわからないだろうね。勿論、正式には夏至が夏の始まりだ。それはそうなんだろうけど、メモリアルデーの方が夏の始まりとしてより認識されているね。知っているだろうけれど、わしは夏が好き。だからメモリアルデーはわしにとっては素晴らしい日なんだ。

私 あ、そう。
Dali In this sense, the opposite of Memorial Day is Labor Day, which marks the end of summer. So, Labor Day is the saddest day for me. Anyway, I like Memorial Day because it makes summer start about one month earlier, and thus makes it a little bit longer.
ダリちゃん そういう意味で、メモリアルデーの対極にあるのがレイバーデーだ。夏の終わりを告げる日だね。だからレイバーデーはわしにとっては最も悲しい日なんだ。とにかく、わしはメモリアルデーが好き。だってこの日があるから、（夏至を夏の初めとする場合に比べ）夏が一カ月程早く始まるし、その分少し長くなるから。

私 で、ふつうのアメリカ人はこの日何するの？
Dali Well, on Memorial Day weekend, which comprises the Saturday and Sunday before Memorial Day and Memorial Day itself, many Americans do something related to summer for the first time in the year. It would be something we do only in summer. Usually it is an outdoor barbecue. This is the most popular activity on Memorial Day weekend. Another summer activity might be swimming, but, to be honest, it may still be a little cold for swimming.
ダリちゃん そうだなあ。メモリアルデー・ウィークエンド、つまりメモリアルデー直前の土・日とメモリアルデー当日を指すんだけれど、多くのアメリカ人がその年初めて、夏に関わる何かをするね。夏だけにしかできない事を。大概それは野外でのバーベキューだ。これはメモリアルデー・ウィークエンドの定番行事だ。もう一つ夏のアクティビティに水泳があるが、正直、泳ぐにはちょっと寒すぎるね。

私 バーベキューか……。いいねえ。
Dali This is the first barbecue of the year. We can smell the barbecued meat, wines, and all of these delicious foods. Memorial Day barbecue is wonderful!
ダリちゃん この年初めてのバーベキューさ。グリルした肉の匂い、ワインの香り、色とりどりのおいしい食材……。メモリアルデーのバーベキューは最高だね。

In Japan, no one any particular feeling about Memorial Day. But for Americans, the day symbolizes the beginning of summer. A common activity on Memorial Day weekend is an outdoor barbecue. Dali says that he also likes yakiniku. However, whenever he eats yakiniku with his students of the English class, he always is frustrated not to get his meat. He can eat well-done meat only. So, before the meat gets well-done, the students eat them away without fail.
日本では馴染みのないメモリアルデーだが、アメリカ人には夏の始まりを想起させる日なのだそうだ。メモリアルデーを含む週末には「バーベキュー」をするのが定番なんだって。ダリちゃんは「焼肉」も好きだそうだが、よく焼かないと食べれないようで、英会話の生徒さんたちと食べに行った際、ダリちゃんが食べる前にみんなが肉を取ってしまうので、いつも悔しい思いをするそうである。
