Dali Hanami? We enjoy flowers very much. I remember one time, many years ago, in the US, riding in a car in springtime with Mother. We passed many places with trees with beautiful white flowers. Mother told me, “These are Bartlett Pears.” The Bartlett Pear is a popular flowering tree in the US. In springtime, we commonly see Bartlett Pear flowers as we are walking or driving by.
ダリちゃん 花見？ わしらも花をとても楽しむよ。何年も前になるけど、アメリカにいた春のある時、わしは母親と車に乗っていたんだ。白いきれいな花を咲かせた木のあるたくさんの場所を通り過ぎたんだ。母親はわしに「これらはバートレット梨だよ」って言っていた。バートレット梨はアメリカでは人気のある花を咲かせる木だ。春には、徒歩や車で通っていると、よくバートレット梨の花を見かける。

Dali No, there is no custom of sitting on a blue tarp under the cherry blossoms. I think Americans might think the idea boring because they imagine it is just seeing flowers. But we gaijins in Japan soon realize that it’s not just the flowers, but also the enjoyment of drinking, delicious food, conversation, and the beginning of spring. We realize it’s the first outdoor activity that we can enjoy in the year. Unfortunately, we don’t have this custom in the US.
ダリちゃん いや、桜の花の下で青いシートを敷いて座る習慣はないね。アメリカ人は、そのような考えは退屈だと思っているとわしは思う。ただ花を見るだけと想像するから。でもわしら日本にいる外国人は、花を見るだけじゃなく、お酒や、おいしい食事や、おしゃべり、それに初春を満喫するんだ、ということがわかる。花見は今年最初のアウトドアアクティビティだとわかる。残念だけどアメリカにはそんな習慣はないね。

Dali In the US, of course, we have many flowering trees. But maybe it’s not so enjoyable to sit under them. There is a very unique and beautiful thing about sakura trees, which is not present in Bartlett Pears or other flowering trees. In Japan when you are under sakura trees, sitting, eating, and drinking, you can see what this unique thing is. I think it is an important reason why hanami is so enjoyable.
ダリちゃん もちろんアメリカにはたくさんの花の咲く木があるよ。でもその下に座ってもあまり楽しくない。桜の木にはバートレット梨や、他の花の咲く木には見られないユニークで美しいことがあるんだ。日本で、桜の木の下で座って飲み食いしたら何がユニークかわかると思う。花見をとても楽しいものにする重要な理由だと思う。

Dali Well, it’s the flurry of sakura petals. This unique phenomenon cannot be seen in other flowering trees, whose petals fall only after they have decayed and become brown. But the sakura petals fall while they are still young and beautiful. The lovely sakura petals are so beautiful.
ダリちゃん そうだね。それはね、桜吹雪なんだ。このユニークな現象は他の花の咲く木には見られない。普通、花びらは朽ちて茶色になってから散るだろう？ でもね、桜の花びらはまだ若くてきれいなうちに散るんだ。愛しい桜の花びら、とてもきれいだ。
