水戸偕楽園 Mito Kairaku-en Park

偕楽園　Kairaku-en

偕楽園は文字通り「民とともに楽しむ」という意味で、水戸藩第9代藩主徳川斉昭が1841年に創建しました。毎月「三」と「八」の付く日は、江戸時代にもかかわらず領民にも開放されていたというから、びっくりです。

Kairaku-en, which literally means "a park to be enjoyed together", was built in 1841 by the local lord, Tokugawa Nariaki.  Even in the feudal times, it was open for the local commoners on the days with (the numbers) 3 or 8 (on them).

茨木県水戸市にあり、兼六園（金沢）、後楽園（岡山）とともに日本3大庭園の1つと言われています。

It is located in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture and is considered one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan as well as Kenroku-en and Koraku-en.

偕楽園は、梅の開花時期が最も魅力的ですが、驚くことに、庭園への入園料は…なんと無料です　（2019年秋から県外観光客を対象に有料化するとも言われていますが…）

Kairakuen is most attractive during the plum blossom season. 　To my astonishment, entry to the garden is....free!! (But unfortunately, they are expecting entry fees from this autumn, 2019.)

今日はあいにくの雨ですが　梅は本当に見頃！人出も少なくて、意外と良いものです

Unfortunately it was rainy, but plum trees were almost in full bloom.

 ↑奥が好文亭表門。実は、私が写真を撮っている真後ろは、普通の住宅街が広がっていて、何とも不思議な感じです。

この門は、空襲でも焼け残った1842年創建当時の物です。千波湖に面する南門に対して北門にあたり、好文亭表門から一ノ木戸門をぬけ、杉木立や孟宗竹林を抜けて中門に入り、視界がぱっと開ける好文亭へと至る順路が、「偕楽園記」にある陰陽の世界を堪能できる創建からの順路と言われているそうです。

四方を眺め、千波湖からの涼風を受けながら碁や将棋を楽しんだところとのこと。（奕は囲碁のこと）

This is Japanese Chess Grounds and those who played Igo and Shogi games here could enjoy the four directional panoramic view and the cool breeze from Lake Senba. (Eki means Igo.)

 

好文亭　Kobuntei

1842年、水戸藩9代藩主、徳川斉昭公によって建てれられた好文亭。「好文」は中国の故事で「梅」を意味します。
1945年8月2日に空襲で全焼、1955年から3年をかけて復元されました。さらに1969年に落雷により奥御殿が焼失しましたが、1972年に復元。2011年3月の東日本大震災でも被災して閉館しましたが、翌2012年2月に開館したとのことです。

Kobuntei was built in 1842 by Nariaki Tokugawa, the ninth Load of Mito.  'Kobun', derived from a Chinese fable, means 'plum' .
It was completely burnnned down on August 2, 1945, as a result of an aerial attack during World War II. It took three years from 1955 to rebuild it. The nobles' private headquaters experienced a fire in 1969 due to lightning, and was restored in 1972 again. It was damaged due to the Great East Japan Earthquake and closed, and was reopen in February, 2012.

滑車式昇降機で、階下からお膳を運べるようにとの、斉昭公の創意によるもので、日本初のエレベーターとも言われているとか。

This lift was used to serve meals and wine for dinner on the 3rd floor.  Lord Nariaki originated the idea of this equipment.
