知床/ Shiretoko in Hokkaido

知床半島の西側にあるオシンコシン滝。
国道に面していてアクセルが便利です。
Oshinkoshin Falls is located on the western side of the Shiretoko Peninsula.
It faces the national road and is easily accessible.

想像以上に広かったですが、トップシーズンは渋滞になるとのことです。

It is bigger than I imagined, but they say the top season will be traffic jam.

 

↓ガイドは、いざという時に備えて、熊スプレーを持っています。
Shiretoko Goko Lakes registered guide, who know how to deal with bears and has  bear spray in case of emergency.

↓頭のてっぺんが赤い、最大のキツツキ、クマゲラ。
You can see a black woodpecker, a largest woodpecker with a red head top.

↓ヒグマのうんち/ brown bear poop

↓ヒグマは水芭蕉の根っこが好物です。
Brown bears like the root of skunk cabbage.

 

↓二湖と硫黄山/ Lake Niko and Mt. Io (left)

↓山の白い部分は残雪ではなく、火山の噴出物とのこと。
The white parts of the mountain are not remnants of snow but volcanic ejecta.

↓一湖にあるスイレンはきれいだったのですが、昭和初期（？）に人によって持ち込まれたものなので、駆除するか思案中とのこと。
Water lilies in Lake Ikko are beautiful, but they were brought in by people in the Showa era. Therefore, they are currently considering whether to exterminate water lilies.

↓ここからは無料の高架木道。
ヒグマの被害を避けるため、電気柵で守られています。
There is a free elevated wooden path from here.
It is protected by an electric fence to avoid damage by brown bears.

この辺りが広く見晴らしが良い理由は、戦後しばらくは人によって農地が開拓されていたからです。国立公園になってから、自然回復を図っていますが、厳しい環境のため、以前のような森にするのは大変とのことです。
The reason why this area has a wide view is that farmland was developed by people for a while after the war. Since it became a national park, they have been trying to restore the natural environment, but they say it is difficult to restore the forest to the way it was before because of the harsh environment.
