安土城跡 Azuchi Castle Ruins

Azuchi Castle Ruins/Shiga Pref.

安土城跡は、安土駅から車で約10分、徒歩だと25分くらいかかります。

かなり不便な場所ですが、織田信長ファンでなくても、歴史好きの方は、是非是非訪れていただきたい場所です

It takes about 10 minutes by car, or 25 minutes on foot, from Azuchi Station to Azuchi Castle Ruins. 

Though they are in a little bit inconvenient place to go,  you should once visit there if you are a fan of Japanese history or a fan of Nobunaga Oda.

 

 

安土城は、長篠の合戦の翌年の1576年、標高199mの安土山に築城開始、1579年に日本で初めて天守閣を持つ城として完成しました。しかし、3年後の1582年に本能寺の変のすぐ後に天守は焼失。織田信雄が誤って焼き払ったという説、敗走する明智光秀軍による放火の説などあり、原因は不明のようです。

It took three years for Nobunaga to complete Azuchi Castle in 1579 which had a magnificent castle tower. (Castle towers had never been seen in Japan before that time. )

Unfortunately the tower was burn out in 1582 only three years after it was completed.

城跡は、信長公が自らの菩提寺として他所から移築したと伝わる摠見寺の敷地内にあり、入山には、大人1人700円の拝観料が必要です。

2月上旬は雪が多く、入山禁止だったそうで、入ることができてラッキーでした。

Azuchi Castle Ruins are in the compound of Souken-ji Temple, which used to be replaced from another area by Nobunaga himself as his family temple.

(the entrance fee: ￥700 for adults)

They said it snowed heavily in the beginning of this February, so it was prohibited to enter the area.  I was lucky!

 

 

ここには、かつて、信長の家臣だったころの秀吉の住まいがあったようです。 

Here used to be a house of Hideyoshi Toyotomi, when he was a subordinate of Nobunaga.

The word "Seki Butsu" means Stone Buddha. Nobunaga built Azuchi Castle immediately on the top of the hill.

Many stones were necessary and even Seki Butsu were used as steppingstones. Amazing!

Money is offered to deities.

 信長の一周忌に、秀吉は、織田一族や家臣を集め、盛大な法要を行ったとのこと。

Hideyoshi held a grand memorial service on the first anniversary of Nobunaga's death, gathering his relatives and subordinates here.

 西の琵琶湖、北に雪に覆われた伊吹山を見ることができます。

　　　かくとだに　えやは伊吹の　さしも草　
　　　　さしも知らじな　燃ゆる思ひを

You can see Lake Biwa to the west and Mt. Ibuki covered with snow to the north.

三重塔

Three-Storied Pagoda

なんと、1454年に甲賀の長寿寺に建てられたものを、信長が移築したとのことで、1604年には豊臣秀頼が一部修理したとのこと。

その後大正時代にも修復されたようですが、なんとも歴史のあり、感激しました。

This pagoda was originally built in 1454, replaced by Nobunaga, and repaired by Hideyori Toyotomi in 1604. 

The pagoda must have gazed a long unique history here.

Nio-mon (a Deva Gate) and Kongo-rikishi (Guardian Gods) Statues

deva=ﾃﾞｨｰば＝（ヒンドゥー教・仏教の）神

仁王門は1571年、金剛力士像は、なんと応仁元年（1467）に作られ、信長が甲賀から移したとのことです。

The gate was built in 1571 and the wooden guardian-god-statues called Kongo-rikishi were carved in 1467.

Nobunaga brought them from Kouga (a southernmost area of Shiga Pref.).

当時の人々が、この山門をくぐって摠見寺を参拝した時、壮麗な安土城の天守閣を間近に見上げて、どう思ったかを想像すると、感慨深いです。

I wonder how civilians at that time felt when they went through this gate, visited Souken-ji Temple, and looked up to find a magnificent castle tower!

安土城郭資料館は、安土駅前にあります。入館料200円。

It stands in front of Azuchi Station. (Entrance Fee: ￥200)
