謙譲の美徳が率直な論議を妨げる
我々日本人は、謙譲を美徳としている。会議における発言も控えめで、欧米のように自己主張が強くはない。例えば、或る悪しき問題が有ったとして、その問題の程度が極めて大きい場合でも、「相当大きな問題だと思います」と言う様に表現を和らげる事が多い。
こうした表現の癖は、問題解決には非常に害となる事は当然である。会議のメンバーが、全員日本人ならまだしも日本語のニュアンスに弱い外人がいる場合には、大きな問題となるだろう。
日本の企業における生産性の低さは、ブルーカラーよりもホワイトカラーの職種で著しい。これは権限委譲の度合いが少なく、連携と談合という会議で行っており、この時の意志伝達を謙譲の美徳が邪魔をしているのであろう。
The virtue of humility prevents frank discussion
We Japanese consider humility to be a virtue. We are modest in our comments during meetings and are not as assertive as people in the West. For example, if there is a serious problem, even if it is extremely serious, people will often soften their statement by saying, "I think it's a pretty big problem."
It goes without saying that these kinds of expression habits are extremely detrimental to problem solving. If all the members of a meeting are Japanese, it's one thing, but if there are foreigners who are weak at picking up on the nuances of the Japanese language, it can be a big problem.
The low productivity of Japanese companies is more noticeable in white-collar jobs than in blue-collar jobs. This is because there is little delegation of authority, and they hold meetings that involve cooperation and collusion, and the virtue of humility gets in the way of communicating intentions.
