Dali Let me give you an anecdotal example. Last week, I ate lunch with my wife in a food court at Aeon Mall in Higashi-Kurume. While there. I saw a white gaijin boy with his Japanese girlfriend walking past. My wife didn’t see them because she was on the opposite side of the table facing me. When they walked behind her, her nose sniffed, and she said, “I smell a gaijin.” I said, “Yeah, I smell a gaijin, too.” It wasn’t a dirty body odor but the smell of his cologne. Whenever we smell cologne, we know there’s a gaijin nearby. Thus, in Japan, I have come to hate wearing cologne.
ダリちゃん わしの体験に基づいた例を紹介しよう。先週、わしは妻と東久留米のイオンモールのフードコートでお昼を食べてたんだ。そこにいる間にね、白人の外国人の男子が日本人のガールフレンドと、そばを通り過ぎるのを見たんだ。わしの奥さんはわしの方を向いていてテーブルの向かい側だったのでカップルを見てなかった。妻の後ろを彼らが通った時、彼女は鼻をクンクンとさせて「外国人の臭いがする」と言った。わしは「そうだね。わしも外国人の臭いを感じる」と言った。不潔な体臭じゃなく、その男のコロンの臭いだった。コロンの臭いを感じるときはいつも近くに外国人がいるとわかる。だからわしは日本ではコロンをつけるのが大嫌いになったんだ。

The concentration of oils in perfume is 20-40%, while that in cologne is 2-5%. Like Dali, I never use cologne myself. So, for us, cologne is of no value, here in Japan. But on the train in mid-summer, even in Japan, it might benefit the fat nerd, sweating profusely, sitting right next to me.
