The Mercury dime was released into circulation on October 30, 1916. It was particularly praised. Although the designer Adolph Weinman intended the obverse design as a young Liberty with a winged cap, many of the public mistook it for a depiction of the Roman God Mercury, leading to the famous nickname of the Mercury dime. It is alleged that the model of the young Liberty was Elsie Kachel Stevens, the wife of Wallace Stevens, a famous American poet. Adolph was considerably saddened by the public’s misinterpretation of his design.
The 1938-D Mercury dime struck at the Denver Mint, made of 90% silver, with a relatively low mintage of 5,537,000 pieces, is very popular among collectors. Its estimated value is $3.18 in average condition and can even be worth $21 to $41 or more in uncirculated mint condition. In the conversation, Dali said that he loved the Mercury dime. I don’t know whether he possesses the 1938-D Mercury dime.
