Dali Long, long ago, in the US, the barber had more than one job. Of course, one job was to cut hair and to shave. But an additional job was to do general surgery. Before we understood the importance of disinfection and sanitation, and before we knew about microbes, surgeons used dirty instruments. Also, this was a time before anesthesia. We didn’t have highly educated doctors. We just had friendly barbers who loved cutting the body, and who loved listening to the screams of his patients.

Dali So in those days, a barber was in fact a barber-surgeon. In those days, a barber, with his very strong arms, also often pulled teeth. If somebody was shot, the barber might cut open the abdomen to remove the bullet. So, there was blood, a lot of blood, for many different surgical procedures.
