Dali Let me tell you something shocking that I saw recently. I was walking along the street and noticed a restaurant. It was not a modern restaurant, but rather old-styled. Outside the restaurant, a sign said, “Curry and Coffee,” which to me indicated that they served curry and coffee.
ダリちゃん 最近見てショックを受けたことを話すね。通りを歩いていたらレストランがあったんだ。モダンなレストランじゃなくむしろ古風なレストランだった。レストランの外には「カレーとコーヒー」と書いた看板があった。カレーとコーヒーを出してくれるんだと理解した。

Dali To me that sounded so unpleasant. To eat curry with coffee? Coffee does not go well with curry. So I started to think about what we Americans eat with coffee. A very simple idea came to mind.
ダリちゃん わしにとってそれはとても不快に感じた。コーヒーと一緒にカレーを食べる？ コーヒーはカレーと合わないヨ。で、わしらアメリカ人はコーヒーと一緒に何を食べるのかについて考え始めたんだ。思い浮かんだのはとっても単純な考えだった。

Dali Well, Americans will eat anything with coffee, if it’s breakfast. So, anything goes well with coffee, if it’s breakfast.
ダリちゃん えーと、アメリカ人はなんでもコーヒーと一緒に食べるね、朝食ならね。だからね、朝食ならなんでもコーヒーと合う。
Me So, it’s no problem with curry and coffee.
私 じゃあ、カレーとコーヒー問題ないじゃない。
Dali You fool! Curry is not breakfast food!!!!
ダリちゃん 馬鹿じゃないの！ カレーは朝食じゃないヨ!!!!
Me Oh, I’m sorry.
私 あ、ごめんなさい。
Dali But, outside of breakfast, people often drink coffee on its own, like a coffee break while they are working. If it’s lunch time, we don’t drink coffee―we usually drink water or a soft drink. But after lunch, if there is desert, like cake or pie, we might drink coffee. If we have steak and salad for dinner, we don’t drink coffee with this food―coffee doesn’t go well with this food.
ダリちゃん でも朝食以外では、みんなよくコーヒーだけを飲むね。仕事中のコーヒーブレイクみたいに。ランチタイムなら、わしらはコーヒーは飲まない。普通、水かソフトドリンクを飲むね。でもランチの後ケーキやパイみたいなデザートがあればコーヒーを飲むかも。ディナーでステーキとサラダを食べるなら、食事とともにコーヒーは飲まない。コーヒーは合わないね。
Me I see. How about Coca Cola?
私 ふ～ん。じゃあコカ・コーラは？
Dali Yes! We Americans love Coca Cola. As you know, I’m American, so I love Coca Cola. I often drink Coca Cola with steak and salad.
ダリちゃん いいじゃん！ わしらアメリカ人はコカ・コーラが大好き。知っての通りわしはアメリカ人。だからコカ・コーラが大好き。わしはよくステーキとサラダと伴にコカ・コーラを飲む。
Me You drink Coca Cola with steak？ Are you 5 years old?
私 ステーキにコカ・コーラ？ 5歳児かよ！
Dali What’s wrong with it? Coca Cola goes well with steak! But coffee, never!
ダリちゃん なにがおかしいの？ コカ・コーラはステーキに合うよ。でもコーヒーはダメ！
