ダリちゃん 夏。そう、夏が一番。

Dali Well, it started in my childhood. You can look at me now and say, “Oh, Dali, you are fat.” It’s true, yes. But when I was in high school or in university, I was very slim and in good shape. But all of my family, except me, was fat. Not just my parents, but also my sister and my brother were very fat. It was just me, who was slim. A handsome boy I was.
ダリちゃん そうだね、それはわしの子供時代に始まる。今のわしを見て「まあダリちゃん、太ってるね」て言うかも。そのとうりだよ。でもね、高校や大学の時はとてもスリムで健康的だったんだ。でもわしを除いて他の家族の人たちはみんな太っていた。わしの両親だけでなく、兄弟姉妹もとても太っていた。わしだけがスリムだったんだ。ハンサムだったんだよ。

Dali Basically, for fat people, summer is a difficult season. They definitely need air conditioning. The ratio of skin area to body volume is lower with fat people. You know, we lose body heat from the surface of the skin by evaporation of sweat. So by sweating, we can become cooler than a fat person can. So in the summer time, my family, father and mother, kept the house extremely cold via the air conditioner, which I hated. Therefore, when I was at my parents’ home in summer, I had to spend most of my time outside. But it’s OK. We had a large yard in which there were chairs. I had my dog. So spending time in the yard was comfortable. I love the summer, and the heat of the summer. I have enjoyed summer ever since I was a child.
ダリちゃん 基本的にね、太った人にとっては、夏は大変な季節だ。彼らには絶対にクーラーが必要だ。体の体積あたりの体表面積の割合は太った人では小さくなる。わしらは、汗の蒸発によって皮膚表面から熱を逃がしているんだ。で、発汗により、わしらは太った人より涼しくなれる。で、夏には、わしの家族、父親や母親はクーラーをガンガンにかけて部屋を超冷やしていた。わしはこれが嫌だった。だから夏に両親の家に行った時は、外で大半の時間を過ごさなければならなかった。でもそれでいいんだ。広い裏庭には椅子がいくつかあったし、犬もいた。だから裏庭で時間を過ごすのは気持ちが良かった。わしはそんな夏が好きだ。そんな夏の暑さが好きだ。子供の頃からずっと夏を楽しんできた。

私 へー、子供の頃は健康的な生活を送っていたんだ。
Dali Yes. But even now as I’ve become fat, I still love the heat of the summer.
ダリちゃん そう。でも、太ってしまった今でさえ、わしは夏の暑さがいまだに好き。
Me Really? I hate the heat of the summer!
私 ほんとう？ 僕は夏の暑さは嫌い！
Dali Japanese people often ask me, “Dali-chan, don’t you get hot?” Of course I do! They often also ask, “Don’t you sweat?” Yes! Summer is hot. That is the nature of summer! Winter is cold! We shiver in winter, and we need a coat. Summer is hot! We sweat in summer, and we need a fan. In my house, I leave the windows open, and I turn on the fan but I don’t use an air conditioner.
ダリちゃん 日本人はよくわしに「ダリちゃんは暑くないの？」と尋ねる。もちろん暑いさ！ 彼らはまたよくわしに「汗かかないの？」と尋ねる。もちろん汗はかくよ！ 夏は暑いんだ。夏なんだから！ 冬は寒い！ 冬には震える。コートが必要だ。夏は暑い。夏には汗をかく。扇風機が必要だ。わしの家では、全部の窓を開け放して扇風機をつける。でもクーラーは使わない。

Dali No! And in Japan, there are even more reasons why I love summer. In Japan, the summer season has so many more interesting customs than in the US. For example, we have summer maturis. They are very enjoyable. We have big ones like Tenjin-Matsuri, Gion-Matsuri, and Kanda-Matsuri. Also many small ones in every neighborhood. We wear getas, which help us stay cool. Getas generate a very nice sound when one walks…clop-clop…We have a pottery pig with katori-senko, which smells very nice. We have furin…ting-a-ling… These are just a few of the many good customs of summer. So life in Japan makes my love of summer stronger―even stronger than when I lived in the US.
ダリちゃん ならないよ！ 日本には、わしが夏を好きになるさらなる理由がある。日本では、アメリカよりずっと面白い文化が本当にたくさんある。たとえば夏祭り。とても楽しめる。天神祭や祇園祭や神田祭などの大きい祭り。また近所の小規模な祭りもたくさんある。下駄を履いて、涼しく過ごせる。下駄を履いて歩く。カランコロン。とてもいい音。蚊取り線香の入った豚の陶器の置物。とてもいい香りだ。風鈴もある。チリンチリン。夏のたくさんの素晴らしい文化のほんの一部だ。で、日本での生活はわしの夏に対する愛をさらに強くする。アメリカに住んでいた時よりもずっと。

I hate summer. I’m not a fan of the hot weather. I admit that getas and katori-senko are important parts of Japanese traditional summer. But I don’t like getas so much because they hurt my feet. I also don’t like the smell of mosquito-repellent incense so much.
僕は夏は嫌い。暑い気候は好きじゃない。下駄と蚊取り線香は日本の伝統的な夏の重要な一部だということは認めるけど、下駄は足が痛くなるからあまり好きじゃない。蚊取り線香の香りもあまり好きじゃない。
