海外のレストランで役に立つ英単語

Good morning, and thank you for your visit!
Today, I’d like to introduce some vocabulary which is useful at a restaurant in a foreign country.

When I was in Toronto, Canada, I visited quite a lot of restaurants.
However, I still remember that it was a pretty difficult task from ordering food to leaving tip for the first time　in 2003.
It’s because there were some unknown vocabulary on the menu, and also I didn’t know what to say in a particular situation at a restaurant.
So, today, I’d like to pick up some vocabulary used at a restaurant in a foreign country.
For example,
・appetizer
・entrée (main dish)
・leftovers
・second helping
・all-you-can-eat buffet (not viking)
・gratuity
・refill
・combo
Hopefully, these words will help you somehow in the future!

カナダ・トロントに滞在していた時、たくさんのレストランに行くことがありました。

今でも覚えているますが、２００３年に留学し始めた当初のレストランでのやりとり（食事の注文～チップの支払いまで）は、とても難しく感じられました。

難しく感じられたのは、英語力がほとんど無かったため“メニューの単語が理解できない＋何と言っていいのかわからない”というのが主な理由でした。

今日はこのような状況の時に役に立つ、レストランのメニューや関連する英単語を取り上げてみたいと思います。

例えば・・・

・appetizer（前菜）

・entrée (主采)

・leftovers（食べ残し）

・doggy bag（持ち帰り用のバッグ）

・second helping（おかわり）

・all-you-can-eat buffet (日本語で言うバイキング、vikingは誤り)

・gratuity（=tip チップ）

・free-refill（フリードリンク）

・combo（セットメニュー）

海外のレストランですぐに使える英語

Today, let’s learn some English expressions that you can use when you are at a restaurant abroad.
I sometimes hear people’s stories about their trip abroad.
When I ask them what the most difficult moment in your trip, they often say “ordering food at a restaurant was one of the most difficult moments” because they say they often receive what they haven’t ordered.
This episode above seems exaggerating, but not.
Actually, this is the story I frequently hear.
When you go to a restaurant abroad, you may realize that communication at a restaurant is more difficult than you expect.
So, let’s learn some useful expressions that can be used in a restaurant.
Here are ones you can use...
・Could you repeat that, please? (when a server speaks very fast.)
・We need another minute. (the response to the question “Are you ready to order?”)
・I'd like/I'll have… (when a speaker asks you your order)
・Could you bring …?/Do you have …? (when you ask a server about the menu)
・What is this? (when you ask about the food)
・This isn't what I ordered. (when you’ve got what you haven’t ordered)
・Check, please. (when you need to get the check)
and another expression you can use to make a reservation is…
・I'd like to make a reservation for five at 7 p.m.
If you master and use them, you’ll be okay at a restaurant abroad.

時々、いろいろな人の海外旅行の経験談を聞くことがありますが、“旅行の中で一番苦労したこと”を聞くと、多くの人は“レストランでのやりとり”を挙げます。

大抵の場合は“ウェイター・ウィトレスが何を言っているのか全然わからなかった”ということや“苦労した挙句、注文できたが注文したものと違うものが出てきた”ということが理由でした。

海外で見知らぬレストランに行かれた方であれば理解できると思いますが、レストランでのやりとりは思ったよりも難しく、実際、この手の話はよく聞きます。

そこで今日は海外のレストランですぐに使える英語を取り上げてみたいと思います。

例えば・・・

・Could you repeat that, please?（もう一度言っていただけますか？）
ウェイター/ウェイトレスの方たちはナチュラルスピードで話してきますので、聞きとれなかった場合に備えて必須の表現

・We need another minute.（もう少し時間をください）
"Are you ready to order?" （ご注文はお決まりですか？）と聞かれた時、注文が決まっている場合は良いですが、決まっていない時の為の表現

・I'd like/I'll have ...（私はが欲しいです/私はにします）
注文時の表現

・Could you bring …?/Do you have …?（・・・を持って来ていただけますか？/・・・はありますか？）

・This isn't what I ordered.（私が注文したものと違います）

・Check, please!（お勘定お願いします！）

この他にレストランの予約をしたい場合は以下の表現が使えます。

・I'd like to make a reservation for five at 7 p.m. (予約をしたいのですが）

これらの表現をマスターし、使いこなせるようにしましょう！

Today, I’d like to announce a trial lesson.This lesson is  for anyone who is interested in taking a conversation lesson, which I’ve prepared for my English school.
Since I started preparing conversation lessons for my English school, I’ve made over 300 lessons.
At present, I’m preparing for my English school to get started, and this is a good opportunity to see if the lesson is good.
Since I was able to get some good evaluations from the last TOEIC trial lesson, I’d like to give another try before I start my own English school.

Today, I’d like to introduce a movie in which one of my favorite actors is in.

The title of the movie is “Shallow Hal”, which is an American romantic comedy film released in 2001.
In Japan, this movie is entitled “Itoshino Rose Mary.”
This movie is very funny because of its story and also acting by Jack Black, who is one of my favorite actors.
Actually, this movie is not only funny, but also good from the English learning point of view.
Why it’s good from the English learning point of view is with this movie, you can learn some expressions related to love.
It’s worth watching, so when you have time, try it!

今日おすすめの映画”Shallow Hal”（邦題：愛しのローズマリー）はアメリカのラブコメディーで２００１年に公開された作品です。

この映画はストーリーが面白いだけでなく、自分の好きな俳優の一人であるJack Blackの演技がさらにこの映画を面白くさせています。

また、この映画の良いところは“面白い”だけの作品ではなく、英語学習の観点から見ても“恋愛に関する英語表現がたくさん学べる”と言う点でとても良い作品です。

TOEIC無料体験レッスン (5/14) 実施の感想

Good morning, and thank you very much for checking out this blog!
As I wrote about in this blog about "May 14th trial lesson" (http://blog.goo.ne.jp/artismart/d/20110508) on May 8th, I had an opportunity to teach TOEIC trial lesson yesterday.
Thanks to the people who were interested in taking my TOEIC lesson, I was able to get some honest comments and feedback from them, most of which were positive!
A comment from a student is: “The lesson was easy to understand and even though it was a TOEIC lesson, I was able to learn something useful that I can use in my real life.”
Another comment is: “I felt the lesson was very short even though I took 90-minute lesson because it was fun. In the lesson, there was not only a lecture but also a game to use English that I learned.”
Once again, I really appreciate those who took the lesson yesterday!
I’m thinking about giving another trial lesson again soon!

英語のトリビア - 日本語と少し違う野球に関する英語

Today, I’d like to write about English trivia about baseball vocabulary.

Personally, when I was young, I played baseball a lot.
So, baseball is one of my favorite sports.
Even though Japanese professional baseball league was delayed to begin its season this year, it started successfully like Major league baseball.
As you know, baseball is from the U.S., so there are a lot of baseball jargons, some of which are the same as Japanese; however, others are totally different.
So, today I’d like to pick up “different” ones.
Here’s the list of some of different vocabulary:
・Pre-season game
・Regular season
・Post season (Japanese call it play off)
・Sweep
・Extra inning
・Doubles
・Triples
・Game ending home run
・Base loaded
・Hit by pitch (Japanese call it dead ball)
There are some others, so if you are interested in them, please look them up!

個人的に小さい頃、友達と集まっては野球をしていたこともあり、野球は好きなスポーツの１つです。

今年、日本のプロ野球の開幕は遅くなってしまいましたが、メジャーリーグ同様に無事に開幕しました。

ご存知だと思いますが、野球はアメリカから来たスポーツで、野球用語にはたくさんの英語が使われています。

その中のいくつかの野球英語は日本語と同じか、似ているものがありますが、まったく違うものもあります。

今日は日本語とは少し違う野球に関する英語を取り上げてみたいと思います。

英語学校起業に向けた５月のコンサルティング受講

Today, I’ll write about the consultation that I took in Kawasaki yesterday.
I feel like it's been quite long since I took the last consultation last month. (Maybe, it’s because there was "Golden week.")
The consultant was Mr. Koji Takeuchi, who is a famous small and medium enterprise management consultant.

He is really good at giving advice using computer, iphone and stuff, such as web, blog, twitter and their related fields.
Yesterday, I mainly asked him about how to use blog, twitter more effectively.
The advice was very informative and useful, therefore, I can see some effect in Twitter already.
What I need to do from now on is to continue searching for the best place for my English school, and to prepare for my English school to get started!!

今から英語学校起業に向けてするべきことは“英語学校となるベストな物件をあきらめずに探すことと、今できる同時に創業に向けた準備を１つずつ確実にこなすこと”です。
あせらず一歩ずつ前向きに進みたいと思います！

辞書を片手に英単語を楽しく覚えられるおすすめの英語のボードゲームScrabble

Today, I’d like to recommend a board game which is good for learning vocabulary and spelling.
The name of the board game is called “Scrabble.”
Scrabble is a word game that can be played from 2 to 4 players.
As you see the photo below, the rules of Scrabble is quite easy.
Basically, you need to make a word with your alphabet pieces.
If you can't come up with a word, look up a dictionary!
I can recommned Scrabble to anyone who can look up a word in a dictionary.
It will surely strengthen your knowledge of vocabulary and spelling!!

本日は“辞書を片手に英単語を楽しく覚えられるおすすめの英語のボードゲームScrabble”の紹介です。

Scrabble（スクラブル）は英語圏（アメリカ・カナダなど）のボードゲームで、英単語及びスペルを学ぶのにとても役立つゲームです。

Scrabbleは2人～4人までの人数で遊ぶことができます。

上記の写真を見て頂けますとおわかりいただけると思いますが、ルールはいたって簡単です。

基本的なゲームの進め方としては、順番に自分の手持ちの駒（アルファベット）で英単語を作っていきます。

英単語が思い浮かばない場合に備え、辞書を手元に置いておくとスムーズにゲームが進行すると思います。

ゲームを楽しむと同時に英単語の知識とスペルが身につくと思いますので、辞書が引ける年齢の子供にもおすすめの英語ゲームです。
