Dali I would like to talk about the difference between American McDonald’s and Japanese McDonald’s.

Dali Basically, the food tastes the same. But sometimes there are differences, like Tsukimi Burger, which is purely Japanese. There are some other menu items peculiar to Japanese McDonald’s, such as Chicken Tatsuta and Teriyaki Burger. However, the majority of the food tastes exactly the same. For example, the taste of Hamburger, Big Mac, Cheeseburger, Quarter Pounder, Egg McMuffin, and Sausage McMuffin is exactly the same as in the US. But there is one thing that is very different.
ダリちゃん 基本的に味は一緒。でも、時々違う。月見バーガーとか。純粋に日本だけどね。他にいくつか日本マクドナルド特有のメニューもあるよ。チキンタツタやてりやきバーガーなど。でも大多数のメニューの味は全く同じ。たとえば、ハンバーガー、ビックマック、チーズバーガー、クオーターパウンダ―、エッグマックマフィンやソーセージマックマフィンの味は、アメリカのと全く一緒。でもね、一つだけとっても違うことがある。

Dali McDonald’s is the business that started the true idea of fast food. Unfortunately, Japanese McDonald’s is not fast. Let me tell you about the American McDonald’s. Just like in Japan, you form a line, wait, go to the register girl. She asks for your order, “What would you like?” I order, “I would like two Hamburgers, five Cheeseburgers, two Big Macs, and two Quarter Pounders. No, no, one Quarter Pounder and one Quarter Pounder with Cheese. Yes, this is for my family.” She says, “That will be 26 dollars and 80 cents.” And she takes my money. Up to this point, it’s the same as in Japan.
ダリちゃん マクドナルドは、ファストフードの真の理念のもと始まったビジネスだ。残念ながら日本のマクドナルドは「ファスト」じゃない。アメリカのマクドナルドについて教えてあげるね。日本と全く同じで、列に並んで待ってから、レジのお姉ちゃんのところに行く。彼女は「何になさいますか？」とオーダーを聞く。わしは「ハンバーガー2つ、チーズバーガー5つ、ビックマック2つとクオーターパウンダ―２つ。いやいや、クオーターパウンダー1つとチーズ入りクオーターパウンダー1つ。そうそう、家わしの家族にね」とオーダーする。彼女は「26ドル80セントになります」と言う。そして、彼女はお金を受け取る。ここまでは、日本と一緒。

Dali But in Japan, after taking payment, she gives you a receipt with a
number. You have to take this receipt and wander out somewhere in the
restaurant to wait, holding the piece of paper with a number on it and looking
at a screen. Everything is so disorganized as many other customers are also
wandering around. Finally, they call my number, and I go up to the counter to
get the food. I hate the Japanese system of McDonald’s. I hate it! I HATE it!
ダリちゃん でも日本では、支払いを終えた後、番号の書かれたレシートをもらう。客はこのレシートを受け取り、レストランの中のどこかでうろうろして待たなきゃならない。番号の書かれた紙を握りしめ、スクリーンを見ながら……。他の多くの客もうろうろしているのでぐちゃぐちゃになっている。やっとのことで番号が呼ばれて、カウンターのところまで行って商品を受け取る。日本のマックのシステムはわしは嫌い。嫌い。ほんと嫌！

Dali Here is the American system. Register girl takes the money, gives you
change, and maybe gives you a receipt. Then, she turns around, takes a bag, puts
all of your order into it, turns back and, gives you the bag. THAT’S fast food.
ダリちゃん アメリカのシステムはこうだ。レジの女の子がお金を受け取って、お釣りを渡して、多分レシートを渡す。それから向きを変えて、袋を取って、オーダーの品をすべて中に入れて、こっちに向きを変えて、袋を渡してくれる。これが「ファストフード」だよ。

very convenient. Why such difference?
私 それは便利だね。なぜそんな違いが出るの？
Dali I know the system because I use to work at McDonald’s when I was in high
school. There is, of course, the main store manager. But in addition, there is also
a manager of food. This manager is always counting food and anticipating coming
demand. His job is to make sure that there is a sufficient supply of finished
food. For example, it is very busy at lunch time. The manager might suppose
that twelve Hamburgers are needed. The manager will yell to the cook, “Twelve
Hamburgers!” And within five minutes, twelve Hamburgers drop into the hopper, ready
for the register girl to take for the customer. The manager says, “Five Big
Macs!” These then flow into another hopper. Each item on the menu flows into
its respective hopper.
ダリちゃん 高校の時よくマクドナルドで働いていたからシステムを知っているんだ。もちろんメインの店長はいる。でもそれに加えて、フードマネージャーと言う役職もある。彼は常に製品の数を数えていて、入ってくるオーダーを予想している。彼の仕事は出来上がった製品の十分な量を確保することなんだ。たとえば、ランチタイムは非常に忙しい。フードマネージャーはハンバーガーは12個必要だと考える。彼はコックに「ハンバーガー12個！」と叫ぶ。そして、5分以内に12個のハンバーガーがホッパーに放り込まれる。レジの女の子がお客の為にすぐさま取れるように。彼は「ビックマック5個！」と言うと、もう一つのホッパーに注入される。メニューのそれぞれのアイテムはそれぞれのホッパーに流し込まれる。

Dali Now, some food might not be very popular and so the manager might not
call for any finished inventory of these items. In this case, the register girl
says, “Oh, I’m sorry that will take ten minutes. Is that OK?” Perhaps a
Filet-O-Fish or something.
ダリちゃん さて、ある製品はあまりポピュラーじゃないのでマネージャーはそれらの製品の出来上がったストックをオーダーしないかもしれない。こういう場合は、レジの女の子は「あのう、申し訳ございませんが10分程お時間をいただきますがよろしいでしょうか？」と言う。多分、フィレオフィッシュなんか。

Dali But in Japan, the register girl takes the order and enters it into the computer. From that point, in the kitchen, they start to make it. As I explained, this causes an awful situation in which the people who have ordered wander around in the restaurant.
ダリちゃん でも日本では、レジの女の子はオーダーを取ってからそれをコンピューターに入力する。その時点から、調理場ではオーダーの品を作り出す。さっき言ったようにこのことがひどい状況を生み出すんだ。オーダーした客がレストランをうろうろするというね。

wonder why the Japanese McDonald’s doesn’t adopt the American system.
私 日本マクドナルドはなぜアメリカのシステムを取り入れないのかなあ。
Dali I think I know the reason. If the American system were applied to Japan, Japanese customers would be suspicious of the freshness of the food. When the register girl took the hamburger from the hopper, Japanese customers would anxiously ask, “How old is that?”
ダリちゃん 理由はわかるよ。もしアメリカのシステムを日本で取り入れたとしたら、日本人のお客さんは食材の新鮮さに疑問を持つだろうね。レジの女の子がホッパーからハンバーガーを取った時、日本人のお客さんは「それいつ作ったの？」て心配して尋ねるだろうね。
